View Full Version : looking for a new litter

Hi,

I've been using World's Best Catter Litter for several years. The litter
works great, but I've finally become fed up with the tracking & the dust. I
have two cats, one male and one female. I have a one bedroom apartment, and
every room has litter in it. The jump out of the box and decide to go on my
bed - litter. The couch - covered in litter. My male cat, Otto, is all
black and when he gets out of the box he's wearing four tan boots. Then he
walks across the couch and leaves a trail of dusty prints behind.

My female cat, Tiger, will only urinate once a day. When she does go at
night, she releases quite a bit of fluid. She also sits her butt directly
on the litter and her whole rear end gets soaked and the WBCL clumps all
over her fur and it's a pain to get off sometimes.

So, I'm looking for a new litter that:

1. my cat's won't track all over the place!
2. does not need to be clumping, although that is a plus
3. does not need to be flushable
4. is not made from recycled newspaper (tried that, they hated it)
5. is not made from wood (they didn't like some pine litter)

My sister got a cat last year and I think she mixes regular clay
(non-clumping) litter in with some crystal litter. I think I've seen a
commercial for a litter that comes that way, has anyone tried it? My cat
Tiger used plain clay, non-clumping litter for the first 8 years of her life
and never minded it.

I find little dust w/ the WBCL, but am now (wondering if the newer formula
is the culprit?) also experiencing a LOT of tracking, & the basically the
same problem w. my cats - at least one cat, at any rate - post-litter box
use: sitting right down on the litter while peeing, then sitting other
places in the house & leaving tell-tale marks; *constant* clean-up on my
part.

I've tried the crystal litter. It works really well, but... do not buy
Litter Pearls brand or any of the other round or oval shaped crystal litters
because they *roll*, & I mean roll, all _over_ the place. It's worse than
cleaning up after tracked litter! One of my cats overturns the litter box
every now & again while jumping out; he overturned a box of Litter Pearls
once - what a MESS!

I've used Scoop Away and haven't noticed tracking.

Recently I switched to a new litter called (I believe) Swheat Scoop, which
is a wheat-based clumping litter. It seems to absorb litter box odors about
as well as the Scoop Away, but without the perfume-ie smell. I haven't
noticed any tracking with this litter either.

Both litters seem to produce less dust than others I've used.

I like Better Way. It can be hard to locate, but it is a very fine, soft
clumping litter -- and I find almost no tracking.

I just switched from World's Best Litter (which I've used for 2 years) to
Arm & Hammer Super Scoop. I put down a new litter box with the new litter in
it so I could start switching them over gradually, but my 3 cats all ignored
the boxes with World's Best in them, and used the one box with Arm & Hammer
right away! It does have a strong piney smell to it, but it's very
fine-grained and dense so there's hardly any tracking. And it clumps great.
I wish it was flushable, but other than that it's great. No more dust and
litter tracked all over the place.

I use Swheat Scoop and a woman who works for the company told me to mix a 1/4
teaspoon of vegetable oil into the litter in the box. She said to stir it
really good and that will help with any dust. I haven't tried it yet, just
wonder if anyone else has heard of doing that. Maybe it would work with the
WBCL?

One quarter cup isn't much, but still I wonder if any oily footprints would
show up around the house - on upholstery it could be a problem.

I don't have a dust problem w/ the WBCL, just a tracking & sticking to their
butts (which transfers to other surfaces) problem.

My older cat, Tiger (the one who sits) has peed on my bed a few times. I
have a feeling it started because she went there to clean herself up after
using the box, and got her pee on the blankets and decided afterward that
the bed now smelled like the litterbox. I haven't had that problem in over
a year, when I put her on her pee schedule. Every night between
10pm-midnight I put her in the box, she goes, and then I have to hold onto
her to clean off her butt.

When the crystal type litter first came out I mentioned it to someone at
work and she claimed that it was horrible and poisonous. Then a year or so
later she mentioned buying Litter Pearls, and I reminded her of what she
said previously and she swore she never said that. Today when I was talking
about litter she was back to her original stand of "it's poison, stay away
from it" and of course refused to admit she liked it. I may try a
combination of the crystals and another type of litter and try to find the
best combination. I have two boxes, so I can switch one over and leave the
other with WBCL until I see what my two like.

We use Scoop Away for the two cats at work. I used to like it much better,
but lately I can't find the original formula I used to get and can only find
a scented one. When I pick Stinky up, she smells like the litter. Which is
pretty stinky... I hate that over-perfumed scent. The cats do kick litter
out of the box and the guy who runs the textbook department told me that the
shelves by the litter boxes get really dusty and was blaming it on the
litter. Maybe they need a change, too.

I'll take a look for Sweat Scoop next time I go to the pet store.

pretty stinky...

I checked out their web site. I'm pretty sure I've never seen it in the two
pet stores I usually go to. Is it sold in any of the bigger chains, like
Petco?

No, it's 1/4 teaspoon, not a cup. But you have raised a good point about
possibly leaving greasy footprints. What I do for tracking is I bought one of
those green plastic door mats that look like grass at a K-mart and I put it
outside the box. It does a fairly decent job of catching the litter.

Maybe because you wouldn't be able to measure it accurately and end up with too
much oil? I do know though that they recommend spraying the box itself with
the cooking oil spray to keep the litter from sticking to the box.

Oh, d'uh! I have no idea why I 'read' one-quarter cup. And I read it
twice, & still saw "cup" both times.

I like the Swheat Scoop, so I'll probably keep using it. I haven't tried
the Arm&Hammer, but Swheat Scoop performs about the same as the unscented
Scoop Away.

The only fragrance I can detect with the Swheat Scoop smells vaguely like
bread.

So that's the secret to the Swheat Scoop! I swear sometimes it was
like prying a rock apart trying to get the clumps from the litter box.
I just started using a scoop litter called PaPurr Scoop litter, made
from recycled paper. Very little dust and don't see much litter
scatter in the basement. (God bless basements for putting cat boxes
in!) :) It clumps well too!

Hi Karen! :)
Yep, that's the secret for non-stick box, or what I do is use one of those
heavy duty black garbage bags and stick the box inside. Then I use a twist tie
to close up one end and that's how I get a litterbox liner and the Swheat Scoop
doesn't stick. Then when I change the box, I turn the bag inside out while
carefully pulling out the litterbox and then just toss the garbage bag.

Don't your cats' claws put holes in the bags?

I use the Arm and Hammer clumping type. Not too dusty, a box lasts my
one cat for weeks, I never have an odor problem.
I won't mess with success - he has never refused to use it.

about the cat sitting in it: are you maybe putting too much in the
box? I keep mine about and inch and a half deep.

Amazingly they don't. They did when I tried those regular litterbox liners but
not with the heavy duty garbage bags I get from the hardware store.

I switched to sWheat scoop because of Seamus's asthma, but found it to
be a lot more dusty than I hoped, plus both cats just thought it was
one big snack bowl. I switched to scoop away (unscented) and found
that to also be a bit dusty, and slightly scented. Just bought some
new boxes last week and they must have changed the formula. It now
seems to have no dust at all, the particles are just a tad bit bigger,
so even less tracking, and there is absolutely no odor at all. Nice
surprise.

just thought I would mention it,

You're lucky. Mine shred the liners something awful. I tried garbage bags too,
but finally just gave up using liners. It's Bootsie. She claws *everything* to
cover up, especiallly the sides of the pan, and even the wall.

Oh, no - while Herrie jumps merrily out as soon as he's covered in the box -
he's definitely male: acts like he's playing w/ earth-moving equipment,
building mountains of litter, Demelza otoh paws at the box, the wall next to
the box (would prefer a towel hanging there on which to wipe her paws?), &
the floor around it; she can take *forever*.

LOL! My cat Ernie somehow manages to get the poop covered then often
slings one of the turds out of the box, so it looks like a nice piece
of almond roca on the floor. Luckily my dog doesn't like to go down
into the basement.... :)

It's really cute, if not effective. Booty-girl has little white paws, and she
very daintily rakes over every inch of the side of the pan, then starts on the
wall. One paw on the edge of the pan; tap, rake, tap, rake with the other. Then
she switches paws; tap, rake, tap, rake. She's real meticulous but doesn't
cover very well! Yoda, on the other hand, digs his big old polydacyl feet in
like a backhoe and slings both litter and sometimes turds out in the floor.
