Cat "smacking lips".

[Doll]

For the past few months my four year old male cat has been smacking
his lips constantly. I don't know what else to call it. I guess it
looks like what we would do if we had a bad taste in our mouths. Last
month he went in for some dental work but he was doing it before the
dental work, and still after the dental work. The vet didn't mention
anything abnormal about his mouth other than the usual cleaning. Any
ideas what this could be?

My kitty did something similar when he was very nauseous. He was
drolling and he swallowed a lot. He also licked his mouth a lot to
lap up the drool. In the beginning I thought it almost sounded like
hiccups.

My CRF cat does that from time to time. Besides nausea, this can also
be a sign of excess acidity in the stomach, possibly an ulcer (which CRF
cats are prone to, anyway.) I mix some Slippery Elm bark powder into
his food to ease the condition.

I think a visit to the vet might be in order for the OP.

My CRF cat does that from time to time. Besides nausea, this can also
be a sign of excess acidity in the stomach, possibly an ulcer (which CRF
cats are prone to, anyway.) I mix some Slippery Elm bark powder into
his food to ease the condition.

How much Slippery Elm do you think you mix in per day? I use this,
also, for Shadow with his IBD. I used to mix with food but he's so
picky with wet food that I now just give it in a capsule. 1/2 of a
300mg cap per day.. in the evening when he gets prednisone and then
followed by a few lightly cooked chicken chunks.

SEB in powder form, not caps. I try not to overdo it.

I never measured it - probably less than 1/8 tsp per meal. I got the
SEB in powder form, not caps. I try not to overdo it.

He eats pretty well. Always has an appetite but eats small quantities
multiple times a day. I don't leave food out for him instead we have
set times of feeding. I'm at a loss.

Just a thought, but mine always does that just before he throws up. Could he
possibly be nauseous?

I think he could have a sensitive stomach. You might think about seeing a
vet specialist if your regular vet is not a cat vet. It's not something he's
always done, so I would wonder too.
