Google is an excellent archive for old messages going back to 1981. In
fact it is the only such archive. However it is not a good choice for
day-to-day reading of a newsgroup. For one thing posts are delayed for
hours. Second there is no way to keep track of posts you have already
read or to filter out unwanted messages.

Using your ISP's server is a better way, but there are other servers you
can use which may have better completion and retention. The best of
these for text groups is the free server sponsored by the Free
University of Berlin. See www.individual.net to set up a free account
and password.

Outlook Express is a news reader. A news reader is a program which
contacts the ISP's server and translates the information into a usable
form. There are many other news readers. I use Agent www.forteinc.com .

Yes, you can go through Google (Google Groups - http://groups.google.com )
but it's a PITA. I access it through a (free) German news server with the
OE newsreader. I *could* use my ISP instead of the German server, but my
ISP's news server's service isn't nearly as good. I only use Google Groups
on the rare occcasion when the server's down, or if I want to look up
something in the archives.

Brandy happens to be 100% correct on this. I am a computer programmer
and have spent the past 20 years surrounded by computers. I am also a
usenet junkie and use it for many purposes. Google is not designed for
primary viewing of newsgroups; its main purpose is the viewing of
archival messages.

Xnews is a good choice for reading newsgroups and has support for
binary messages as well (such as mp3s and mpgs). Agent would be a good
choice for simply dealing with text messages. That's what I use much
of the time. Outlook Express is considered, well, less than optimal
for reading news but decent for mail.

Newsbin Pro is possibly the best choice for binary stuff. It
automatically deals with multiple newservers and fills in segments
that are missing from other servers. It's best to use with a decent
ISP newserver, such as RoadRunner, and have a paid backup, such as
Giganews.

But there are many newsreaders and I have not tried them all or even
most of them so I there might be better ones. But Xnews, being free,
powerful, and not too hard to learn, is not a bad choice at all.
