help a fat cat?

I've had my cat for at least 4 months now, and in that time, she has gained
at
least 3 pounds. I am single. My cat is indoor-only and it is now winter.
I'm
thinking maybe the weight gain is because she is less active during the
winter,
and maybe will be more active during summer. Does anyone have cats whose
weight fluctuates in that pattern?

If not, how do I help my fat cat? I've tried feeding her less, but she
only
gets more annoying begging for my food. And she always reminds me (early)
when
its time to feed her. What do you do?

My cat was born in March 2002, and she weighs probably about 14-15 lbs for
a
medium-size cat (Russian Blue).

A co-worker tells me that since I don't turn on the heat in the house, it
is
normal for a pet to store body fat to stay warm, and shed that fat during
the
warmer months. Does anybody else observe this phenomena with their pets?

My Russian Blue (who just passed one month ago) was
always a big boy. At one point, he weighed 18 lbs. I
never limited his diet. I fed him 1/2 can of wet food
in the a.m. and left dry food in the bowl during the
day for both him and his sister. Of course I always
snuck him treats as well. He was just a big cat. Did
it affect him? I don't know, but he lived to be 17.

Mostly it depends on what and how you feed the cat, and if she is able to
get any excercise within the house.

My cats (two) are also indoor cats, and the seem to stay fit. I don't feed
them at specific times, but they have always got dry food and water
available, so they can eat whenever they get hungry. The food is Royal Canin
Light 38, and they like it very much.

In addition to this, I give them a tablespoon of wet food (tin can) a few
days a week. This is only meant as a treat, nothing else. They are never
getting table scraps or other human food.

For excercise, they are allowed to climb most of the shelves and cupboards
in the house, so they can keep up their strength that way. Besides, I play
with them a lot, making them run around and fight with me or anything I
present to them...

I don't think I can give you any specific piece of advice, the only thing I
can do is to tell you what is working for my cats.
