View Full Version : OT- Murphy's Law strikes again, but doesn't win

Some of you may remember that last month I said i was going bankrupt.
Well, the Hearing was yesterday at 4pm in downtown Denver. I have been
so stressed out about it, worrying that some of the creditors would be
there and cause a problem. But it was a piece of cake. There were no
creditors at all and the Trustee said they hardly ever contest. She
was so nice. I was in and out in a few minutes. I felt sort of let
down, after building up for a confrontation. But I am glad it went so
easy. Now to wait for the Discharge Sept 30.

But the trip was a nightmare. Tuesday I had gone to Colorado Springs
for a trip to Walmart and was going to fill my gas tank at a Shamrock
station I knew on the way home that is always cheap, to be ready for
the long trip to Denver. But a storm had passed through and the staion
took a lightening strike that knocked out the gas pump. So I didn't
get my gas. But I knew I had enough to get to a Shamrock I knew at
Parker, south of Denver.

So Thursday we (my son was with me) got the gas at Parker and then
started the car up. It wouldn't run. I smelled gas real strong. I
hadn't flooded it. Jeff finally got it away from the pumps and into
the parking lot at Albertson's. He didn't have any tools or his
electronic testing kit with him. All he could do was look and nothing
was obviously wrong. He said let it cool. So we had a sandwich while
we waited.

We had left home with plenty of time and had a cooler with tuna
sandwiches and bananas and ice water. After awhile, he tried again. It
was the same and then the solenoid stuck, running the starter even
after the key was turned off. So he had to quickly disconnect the
battery.

But I absolutely had to make the Hearing at 4pm. If I didn't show I
couldn't file for another 180 days and that would be after the
deadline for the new law, which means no more chapter 7. So I tried
calling Hopitus. She wan't home. So I called a taxi. Parker is a long
way south, so it took awhile. The driver got me there only a half hour
late. I was the last one called. But it was ok.

The taxi cost $55 with tip. I sure was glad they took a debit card. I
only had $26 in cash and hadn't brought my checkbook. After the
Hearing, we sat on the bench outside the courthouse and rested and
talked and watched the traffic. It has been so many years since I have
been to downtown that I had no idea they had electric trolleys and
electric buses and bendable buses! I felt like I was in another
country. Colorado Springs seems rather provincial in comparison.

We decided to walk to Hopitus's apartment about a mile away. By car,
it is a short distance. When you are 59 and fat and out of condition,
it is a LONG way. We walked slow and rested often and it was so hot
with all the hot motors and the sun beating down. We tried to stay in
the shade every chance we got. But I was wet with sweat by the time we
got where we were going. Also my feet and legs were sore and I was
about all in. I had trouble getting up the steps.

But Hopitus had just gotten home and was very hospitable and had me
lie back on the lounge and take my shoes off and served peach-flavored
tea. It was delicious. I had never heard of it before. I want some
more! WE talked a good bit and I held and petted Maluce. She was
really shedding with the heat. She has such pretty eyes.

Finally, at 7, I called my landlord, who is always willing to help us.
We arranged for him to meet us at the car in Parker, figuring it would
take him about 75 minutes to get there. Then we were hoping Hopitus
could take us to the car. She tried to call her family but didn't get
an answer right away. So we got ready to go. She was nervous cause she
had never been that far and it was all new to her and would be going
home after dark. It was 7:30 by then. And her pickup is small and has
a cover on the bed where Jeff would have to lie down under it. Explain
that to a cop in case we got stopped!

But then her son called back and wouldn't let her take us. He called a
taxi for us and Hopitus pre-paid half the fare. Bless her heart! i owe
you, Hop! My $26 paid the rest of the fare plus tip. My landlord
wasn't there yet, so we had another sandwich and Jeff Tested something
under the hood and said there was no pressure in the manifold and we
suddenly realized we hadn't heard the gas pump. He said the gas pump
was dead. <sigh> I am just so grateful a dear friend had recently
given me some money that will pay for it. And my son can do the labor.

Bob didn't get to us until 9:30. He hadn't gone far enough up Parker
Road and then asked for directions and got sent on a wild goose chase.
But he finally found us. We hitched up the tow strap and started off.
It was full dark by then with no moon. The trip was long and slow with
frequent stops to let the brakes cool off. Once, when we rested, a
state cop stopped, seeing our hazard lights. She was wondering if the
man in front of us was harassing us or something. So we explained.

We finally got home at 11:45 and just fell into bed. But I had to get
up a couple times to take pills cause my feet and legs were cramping
after all the walking and standing.

Poor Shasta was about to bust by the time we got home. She was very
grateful to get outside. I was prepared for her to "go" in the house
somewhere, poor girl. But I had put the dry food feeder for the cats
on the floor in the bedroom with the gate to keep the dog out. That
way Sheba could get some food, even though it is loaded with carbs. I
bet that made her happy! I normally keep the feeder on a 3 foot table
so she and the dog can't get to it. Sheba doesn't jump, having an old
leg injury.

I am so very grateful for my dear friends: Hopitus, and the landlord,
Bob, and my dear friend up north, (you know who you are). Thank you
from the bottom of my heart for helping in my hours of need. May God
Bless you always.

Wow! Watta day! Mercifully I've not had much the like, more thanks to
your samaritans and, somehow it doesn't suprise that Hopitus among
them. Norm

Yes, thankyou, Hop, for helping! And the others, who I do not know, thankyou
anyway.

Purrs to you Catherine that Murphy leaves you alone for awhile and lets you
get your feet under you again. Headbutts to Hopitus and everyone else who
was there to help you and Jeff.

{{{Catherine}}} I'm glad it all ended happily. My thanks and purrs also
go out to the people who helped you, not least to Hopitus.

My goodness, CATherine! What a long, hard day. I'm sorry to hear about the
car going putz on you. Just what you didn't need. But I'm glad you made it
and that the filing went well... or as well as it ever goes when you're
filing for bankruptcy. Purrs indeed to Hopitus, Bob and all who helped
you.

Tomorrow has just GOT to go better!

Thanks. Murphy has a habit of showing up at the worst of times, darn
him! But we were well taken care of, anyway. That peach tea Hop served

A huge city like Denver is no place to be stranded with little or no
money. And Hopitus is the only person I know there. I was feeling
panicky when I first called and she wasn't home. And I haven't been in
a taxi in over twenty years. They are expensive now. The high price of
gas, probably. I am so grateful everything worked out for us. And I am
glad that my car just needs a new gas pump and not something major.

Yikes, what a day! I am glad it all ended reasonably well; we send big
happy purrs to Hopitus and all who helped you. I do hope the vehicle
problem turns out to be manageable.

My son is working on the car now. In-tank gas pump replacement is a
real job. Put car on blocks. remove gas from tank, loosen dirty, rusty
bolts on tank while supporting it so it don't fall on you, then remove
gas pump...

Hop said the peach tea is a big container of mix found at Costco.
