View Full Version : I've got a shouldercat again!

The only cat I've had who really liked riding on my shoulders was
Mingus (died 2000). Ishmael and Muriel could kinda do it, but
didn't like to stay there long; Mingus would happily go for rides
all round the house and purr in my ear. Splodge can be heaved up
there but he's too fat and lazy to hang on properly.

But this evening Courtney just climbed up on my shoulders and
purred LOUDLY at me. I'm always a bit careful about picking her
up, as she has only a pseudo-hip-joint after her fracture, but
she got herself straight up there with no hesitation.

I guess the next step is when she learns to drive.

Feather (RB) could PUTT a little bit but never tried anything more
ambitious. Sometimes I thought he got the idea that he should put it
in the cub but mostly he patted it around the flooor.

Cleo always did love the shoulder. We're not sure if someone taught her or
if she is a natural percher. Fortunately none of the bigger cats have taken
up riding. It's a little unsettling when Cleo jumps up unexpectedly;
especially if one is taking a pee! She's ruined a few dress shirts with her
claws, so now I have an incentive to change as soon as I get home.

Panther was my shoulder cat. I miss my old sweetie! He would lie
across my shoulders around the back of my neck, and I'd hear him purr
in my ear, and occasionally get his version of an affectionate "wet
willie" when he stuck his nose in my ear. At first he was a
respectable, warm weight up there which decreased as he grew older and
more frail. But I'm convinced that cat thought he was my husband.

The girls are more interested in being lapcats whenever I sit in the
comfy TV chair. And while I love them both and like to give them neck
rubbs, chin rubbs and ear scritches, it's never quite the same.

That's great! I've never had a cat do that. Well, Roxy sticks her
nose in my ear and sniffs loudly, when begging for food, but I meant
I've never had a cat lie across my shoulders. That's really cool.

Panther was my shoulder cat. I miss my old sweetie! He would lie
across my shoulders around the back of my neck, and I'd hear him purr
in my ear, and occasionally get his version of an affectionate "wet
willie" (snip)

Amelia used to be my champion shoulder-rider, but now she just
occasionally sits on my shoulder while I'm brushing my teeth and taking my
pills after showering. Tabitha and Ranger do the same.

Harri Roadcat, on the other hand, uses my post-shower rituals as an excuse
to shoulder, but she then stays there as long as I'll let her. She also
wants to ride my shoulders when I'm puttering around in the kitchen, down
in the basement doing laundry, or working in the back yard (when the
weather is warm enough).

I love having a shoulder cat!

O T started out to be a rider but, along the way he got too long and too
fluffy. Willow hates it and Piglet acts like it is too unlady like to do
that sort of thing.
