View Full Version : Heat Wave Finally Breaking

Maybe I can get some sleep, finally? It's been near 100 F. with high
humidity for the last week+. Saturday was particularly miserable, it was
still near 90 at 10 PM. But a few minutes ago the wind picked up and now
it's starting to rain!

Interesting. At nine PM Saturday night, the storm front had a segment in
Missouri running SW to NE, roughly along a line from Joplin to Columbia.
Two line, actually - the second was much less intense; the main line was
mostly one intense cell after another the whole range of the radar map.
That line was four or so counties NW of me, moving in my direction -
figure about three-five hours away.

It never got here.

The cats knew something was up - there were many more cats in and on the
bed during the night, mostly just after I went to bed. Here lately, most
of them have stayed outside, maybe because they don't like AC - the
definitely don't like the fans I use to keep the conditioned air
stirred up (I point the fans upward to mix the hot upper layer and the
cold bottom layer ... but I digress). Usually just Tigger and CJ would be
there early, then sometime during the night, Snowball would settle next to
my pillow (next to the edge) and CJ would have moved across the bed to be
next to Tigger on the other side of the pillow. Last night started with
Fleagor, Curly, and Ozy. Then I remembered that Tigger was still out
(he's too fat to make the leap required to get back in on his own) - as
soon as he had fed his face, he was up in his usual place and the other
has moved about. Then CJ joined the party. Snowball showed up sometime
between midnight and 2:00 AM. When I got up this morning, there were six
of them on the bed.

It does seem somewhat cooler today: the temperatures didn't start off much
lower, but it seems to be heating up a bit slower and the humidity is
a few percent lower. At 11:00 AM my less unreliable remote weather set
says 79 degrees and 61% RH. The other one says 81 degrees and 90%. THe
official data of 79 degrees and 60% are consistent with my 79 degrees
because the official site is quite a few miles away and is in a very
different environment. These numbers are better than yesterday's at that
time.

However, none of that matters - the real test is what it feels like
to go outside. Yesterday about this time I was finishing up dumping the
litter pans out by the west fence, and I was sweating profusely even
though I wasn't working hard (the garden tracter pulled a trailer for the
pans and 70-80 pounds of litter - I just had to lift them out and dump
them). I went out to check what it is like this morning: pure bliss as a
wave of relief washed over me. That was a bad heat wave, as seemed to be
earlier than usual for those things. Or maybe my perception is warped by
the extended rainy season and short transition from raining every day to
getting unbearably hotter each day.

This morning I emptied the trays and refilled them then carried a bin
liner full of dirty litter down one flight of stairs, into the garden
and to the bin store..by the time I got upstairs again I grabbed a
cold beer- not to drink (it was only 11.30 so too early through for a
second I was tempted) but to put the cold can to my face and had to
have a shower to cool down. It's not nice here but thankfully it just
started to rain so I am praying it will clear the air

The heat wave didn't break. It simply moved. It is now over my head. :)

It hit 111F in Phoenix, Arizona, yesterday - forgive me if I'm not
terribly sympathetic! (Although actually, 111 here is probably less
uncomfortable than much lower temps in more humid climates - however,
one tends to forget to keep well-hydrated.)

We hit 111F yesterday as well.

Now I will agree that 98F or 100F without humidity is much more
bearable that a lower temperature in the humid south. Plus we do
get to count on it cooling off a night.

But anything over 110F is damn hot no matter where you live.

I just went out and worked up a sweat, and all I did was fill the
dog wading pool. (No I'm not leaving her out, but she can go out
and play and soak and dry and then come back in)

111 in Florida with humidity would be 140+

I got so hot last week that I actual bake cookies on my truck's dash while
I was in the doctor's
