View Full Version : Are my cat stories THAT boring?

Kajikit[_2_]

It seems as if whenever I post a cat story, nobody ever reads it... or
if they do, they don't have anything to say in reply. It seems to
happen over and over again, and I'm getting paranoid about it... Do I
have cooties that I don't know about?

I do read your stories, I'm sorry I don't reply very often, it's just I
can't think of much to say. Please don't stop posting.

I thought your most recent, or one of your most recent, thread-
starters was wonderful. The one about finding out that Stripey Thing
isn't a stray.
He's quite sweet and his story is too.

I MEANT to reply about the black cat in our neighborhood when I was a
kid who had two families feeding him full-time. EACH family was sure
that they had named him (Panther) and the name probably came from us
neighborhood kids. We named the Morgan's cat Panther and he answered
to it better than to his owners' idea for a name, but not very well. I
meant to answer. But the world interfered.

I was delaying partly because I wanted to remember Tiger Morgan's
"real" name and I still can't. Mrs. M. called him Tiger the last five
years of his life but her husband used to grumple about it.

Some cats can be very good at mobilizing more than one source of
goodies and affection.

Hey, I read them! And I like them! Don't worry about replies; lots of
times I don't get them either, and I do feel like I have cooties then
too. But I know someone's getting some jollies from them. No one is
better at being paranoid than I! keep the stories coming, we all need
them, even if we don't always get the time we'd like to respond.

I didn't know about your cooties!! I Now I'll remember that you have them.
;)
Just for myself, I seem to have times when I just haven't much to say, and
other times when I have too much to say altogether. ;) So I;m sorry for my
part in it, I assure you it's nothing personal. Purrs to your girls.

Nope. We've seemed to have become too obsessed with human stuff and not
interested enough with the kitty tales. I love your stories, but don't
always respond because I am not good at telling someone that their stuff is
great without sounding stupid.

J always read and enjoy your stories, but most times lack the energy to
make a reply. Just like when you read a good book, you place it down
with a sigh of satisfaction! Please keep writing your stories. After
all, it is supposed to be about cats and some posts go far afield. MLB

I read them, and I like them. However, I'm not very good at replying
to someone else, most of the time.
For what it's worth, I get the same thing, and it's okay now. I
understand.
I do like it when my stories seem to generate other stories, though.

Awww, of course they aren't boring! It's hard to reply to all the posts
here. And nearly two weeks later I'm still unpacking boxes (seems like I'm
buried in them, although Persia loves having boxes around, empty or not).

This isn't hollywood. Stories don't need car chases, explosions and
flying bodies to be good reading.

Oh, Karen. You shouldn't feel that way. I always read your posts --
and good for
you, they're always about cats! We get too busy arguing about
celebrities and
other stupid stuff, I guess.
I used to have an online friend that I e-mailed often; I never did
reply to her posts
b/cause I'd make a mental note that I was gonna reply in a personal e-
mail, later.
Then I'd forget, and she ended up getting so ****ed at me for
"ignoring" her posts,
she quit replying to my e-mails. That and some other imagined
infraction I committed,
I guess. She never bothered to tell me what it was.
Anyway, what I'm illustrating is that things aren't always what they
seem. You are
probably appreciated by everyone more than they show it.

I know how you feel. When I post a cat story, it usually gets very little
response. Maybe that's the case for most people? LOL, then people wonder
why there are so many OT posts. Those are the ones that seem to get the
most responses, and generate the most discussion. Maybe most people read
and enjoy the cat anecdotes, but don't post a reply because all it would
say is "awww" or "LOL"? That is often the case when I'm reading.

One thing I've found is that it's easy to come up with negative
reasons for silence, since you don't have any other information. This
can color your interpretation of events. I'm the queen of making up
bad reasons for behavior I don't understand, so I'm speaking from lots
of experience. :)

For example, the one type of post where I almost never get a
response here is on serious OT posts. I know some people here don't
like big OT threads, but clearly many people do, or we wouldn't
have them. It's odd that people hardly ever respond to my comments
on those threads, because those are my best posts! I put a lot of
time and effort, a lot of thought, into what I say in many of our
OT conversations, so it's weird not to get replies.

But when this happened on another online group, I asked about it,
and several people said that the reason they didn't respond to my
posts was that the posts were so complete, and said so well what
needed to be said, that they simply had nothing to add. So I think
that's what's happening here, too. People probably don't know what
to say in response, because my arguments are so well thought-out.
I mean, nobody has trouble expressing disagreement, after all! So
if people disagreed with me, I'm sure I'd be getting tons of responses.
But I don't, and that's because people probably don't want to add
clutter by posting "me, too" posts.

Anyway, blah, blah, blah - the upshot is, *it's not personal*.
There are so many reasons why people don't respond to posts. Your
cat stories are good, so please keep them coming! :)

I can't speak for others, but very often I only READ posts here, without
replying to them. It seems a pointless use of band-width to simply say
"That's a good story, I enjoyed it", so if I have nothing worth saying,
I simply don't SAY it! (Of course "worth saying" is a matter of
individual judgment - I'm sure people often read my comments and wonder
"Why did she bother?".)

No, they aren't!

Yes we read your cat stories and enjoy them.

And I for one should make more of a point of posting something to
let you know I have read and enjoyed a story.

I think its just our nature to read and enjoy a story, but not feel
any need to comment on it, whereas some of the other stuff leads
more to discussions or conversation.

But the stories are what the group is really about, and we all need
to remember that others need validation. (Nothing wrong in that, we
just all have a need to know we have been heard)

Some cats are just born moochers... :) Stripy Thing still comes around
occasionally, but not nearly so often as he used to now that I've
caught onto his true status... I'm a soft touch so I still give him a
little gooshyfood when he shows up, but last time I'd run out so he
didn't get any, and he was disgusted! lol He even tried nibbling at
Tommy's kibble, and he's always tried to tell me that he HATES that
stuff!

Thanks for the warm fuzzies guys... it just makes me a little paranoid
when I see some people getting a zillion replies and I'm being greeted
with a dead silence. Makes me wonder if I dropped a brick or
something!

If you think my stories were cute, or funny, or they made you smile
for a moment, or they reminded you of something that your cat did last
night... please tell me!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't post nearly as much as I
might because it doesn't seem worth the energy to write my little
stories and not get any feedback... No response equals no interest, at
least to my slightly-inclined-to-paranoia mind. I don't even OPEN a
thread titled with the name of a celebrity or a politician or whatever
unless it really grabs my attention. When you've seen the information
on one newsgroup, there isn't a lot of point in repeating it in six
others! If I want to talk about cooking I go to rec.food.cooking as
long as I can stand the idiot trolls, and if I want to talk about
animals I come here... and for anything else I go to AFCA because
their purpose IS to talk about anything under the sun!

I read and collect stories. But, because my time is far more limited
than it used to be, I very rarely post in reply to anyone's stories. It
does not mean I do not enjoy them.

Same here, we are 'the cootied', LOL. But, I don't get offended as easily
as I used to, and I've built a tougher skin. I used to get in so much
trouble. LOL.
Not everybody reads or replies to my posts either, but I'm not posting as
much as I used to. Altho I did get a lot of great responses about my hot
doggie locked in the car story.
I spend a lot of time on RPCC, being a cat. Did you know that cats have a
part of the brain in the same as a human that shows emotion?

Guess I'm like a lot of others, in that I read and enjoy your posts
but seldom reply. For the past few months I only get on line a couple
times a month, and when I do it always seems I have a thousand or so
unread messages. I end up deleting most of the OT stuff, read all the
cat related posts - but seldom reply. Please don't stop posting, as
your posts are a big piece of what I DO read.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think that the lack of response is the main reason more of us don't post
our stories in here as often as we used to are that the controversial and
outlandish threads tend to get more remarks. Of course my poor little me
threads aren't helpful either. Maybe we should set a goal, if you wish, of
posting one animal story thread a day or even a week, for a while. Maybe
that might get us back into the original purpose of the group and stop more
of the defections that we've been having due to the lack of cat and other
animal stories.

BTW what is AFCA? It might be interesting to check out.

AFCA is alt.fan.cecil-adams

He is/was a columnist who would look into anything under the sun for
you and try to find an answer... of course the group has diverged far
from its orginal role of talking about the columns, and they really DO
talk about anything there. I'd say the actual group purpose is
'intelligent discussion about anything under the sun, with a touch of
humour.' About the only thing that really bugs afcans is random
posting of links/articles without adding any actual information
yourself. Sure you can post link to articles you think worth sharing -
but please say WHY everyone else should bother to read it!

Wonderful. I went in there once but the volume of messages was more than my
poor brain could handle at the time. I'll have to check them out again. I
also tried alt callahans for a while but the volume of messages and
clickiness was too intense in there for me. Humm. what about a group

It does have a lot of messages... but nobody says you have to read
them all. I sure don't! I skim through and read anything with an
interesting header and just ignore the rest.

Your stories are amusing.

Now, I hope you don't mind if I change the topic, because I have two
questions about DE:

1.) How do I scatter it evenly into the carpet?
2.) Must it be reapplied after vacuuming?

Thanks in advance!

I don't know Pat... sorry! I don't think it's rocket science though...
I'd just sprinkle it on and then vacuum the carpet a few hours later.
I'm sure some of it will stay in the carpet fibers...

I wouldn't worry too much. I usually read your stories and enjoy them but
time is so short for me I almost never reply and that goes for many other
posts on the group.
Don't take it to heart. Sometimes I get few replies too, but I don't let it
bother me. It does not stop me from posting again <g>
I don't necessarily post to get replies, just when I want to say something
to my friends on here.
Just carry on posting. You would probably be surprised how many people read
them, people you don't even know. When KFC died, I was surprised to get so
many private condolence mails from lurkers who had obviously been following
her story for years but who have never posted on the group.
