I don't know how old Persia is but she's probably about 12, maybe 13. My
bed is rather high off the floor and I've noticed her hesitating when she
wants to jump down (so far jumping UP doesn't seem to be a problem). I
ordered some carpeted pet steps for her. They arrived yesterday afternoon.
I took them out of the box and set them at the foot of the bed. So far she
has sniffed them, even climbed up on them. She has yet to figure out the
next logical step (heh) is to get onto and off of the bed using them for
assistance.

Rusty does something similar. He likes to sit on top of an old step
ladder. But instead
of taking the steps up, he jumps on top of the covered litter box next
to it, and then
climbs on it. Coming down, he just takes 1 step down and hops off.

Jake is eleven, but seems older. Some injuries when he was young I
think are slowing him down. Last night Charlie had to get out of
bed to go lift Jake onto the bathroom counter so he could have his
evening long drink of fresh ice water.

His two favorite water sources are the bathroom counter and the
kitchen counter. Food is on the kitchen counter too. He has missed
a couple of times jumping up on that one but won't take the easier
route of jumping on a nearby sofa first.

Spoiled cats? I'll give you spoiled cats, and raise you one slave
that spoils them unmercifully. Almost 1/3 of our kitchen counter is
reserved for Jake and Molly. That is where their food and water is.
That's where they get their treats and nip. Charlie gets upset if I
sit food out on that part of the counter - not because it isn't a
clean thing to do - it gets wiped down several times a day as well
as first thing in the morning and last thing at night - but because
it doesn't give the cats enough room to jump up and eat if they so
desire.

Last year TuTu hurt her hind leg and has not been able to jump -- until
yesterday. She jumped to my desk and walked over to my lap in front of
the "puter. Did she want cuddles? Yes, but then she wanted lunch! Did
she get it? Of course -- what TuTu wants, TuTu gets. Best wishes. MLB

When Princess (Siamese RB 16) could no longer jump to the couch, I
placed a small stool there. She knew at once what it was for. The
stool I found in K-Mart was made by Rubbermaid and cost me (at that
time) $10.00. They are probably higher now MLB

Stinky loved jumping, and was always good at it, even when he was arthritic.
I got him the stairs, and he ignored them, except to sleep on them
sometimes. Even when he was sick, he would do this magnificent leap from
the kitchen counter to the dining room table, four or five feet. Stinky
just didn't like waking on the floor that much-- he liked to travel around
the house by jumping from one thing to another. ;)

Dante like jumping, too, but he's not that good at it. ;)

That kind of reminds me of when we were house breaking Annie (the
d-thing), and we had a pet gate up in the kitchen doorway (which we later
found that she could jump, nimble thing that she is). Right outside the
kitchen is a little table, and Tennessee (old & arthritic) and Mimi (young
but fat) could both jump on that (it was a few inches shorter than the
gate) and then hop diagonally over the gate into the kitchen. But then
they couldn't get back out of the kitchen.

They were stuck.

They would sit there and meow (and I think Tennessee has some meezer in
his ancestry, as he can be very loud when he wants to). So we started
putting one of our kitchen chairs just inside the kitchen doorway, so they
could hop up on it, and then over the gate and back out of the kitchen.

Annie is 100% housebroken now, and we no longer have the gate up.

Needless to say, neither Tennessee nor Mimi show any interest in going
into the kitchen now that it's no longer a "mystery" and they have easy
access.

And we have shredded wallpaper in our kitchen - not replaced (yet) above
the upper cabinets (actually 2 whole 'sheets' pulled down), below the
window (cats scrabbling to get up - now hidden behind some kitchen chairs
that the cats can use to get up to the sill), and on an 'outside' corner
(very tempting "scratching post").

A while back Little Bit had problems jumping up onto the bed, and I
made some steps to help her. Everyone figured out how to use the steps
in short order - except LB, who meowed from the floor and waited for
the hoomin to pick her up and put her on the bed. 'Course part of that
is just to get the hoomin to pick her up, as I notice she manages to
make it onto the bed just fine when I'm not in the room. Eventually, I
took away the steps, since in my smallish bedroom I couldn't open one
of the closets with them there.

(some may remember this. One evening I turned around and for some
reason her back legs wouldn't support her. TED gave her tests, took
xrays, etc, but never decided on a cause. After a course of steroids
Little Bit was back to normal.)
