View Full Version : Labor Day was darn near perfect.

My older daughter was born on Sept 1, on Labor Day, thirty nine years
ago. Our family of three is now ten, plus several steps.

Yesterday, Vicki had to work, but agreed to come by after for a while.

So our house was full with me and Charlie, Both daughters (who got
along for the duration), their spouses, three grandsons, one baby
granddaughter, my border collie Kayla, and Vicki's tiny Chihuahua's
Camille and Bailey. (Jake and Molly went hunting due to crowded
conditions at home. And a baby with a really strong grip)

Ten year old grandson, Ryan baked the birthday cake, a carrot cake
with cream cheese frosting from an old family recipe, from scratch and
with no help.

Nineteen year old grandson, who just got his first truck this weekend
grilled the brats and franks and ribs while I sat on the lawn swing
with the baby and watched.

Twenty year old grandson brought his laundry (which he did himself)

Just a really nice day all around. Even better than last Thanksgiving
or Christmas.

Dinner: Ribs and Brats and hotdogs
Baguettes with Roasted Garlic/Olive oil/Basil dipping
sauce
Potato salad
Baked Penne with Gruyere cheese
Sliced Tomatoes and cucumbers with fresh mozzarella
Melon
Homemade Salsa and Chips
Carrot Cake with ice cream

Sounds near perfect to me! So does the menu. We do kind of the same
thing on the 4th of July,
and I enjoy it more than Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner. So much
less stress, or something.
Except we have no children in the family. Our "baby" is 26 and we
don't have grandchildren.
I've found that rambunctious children make me somewhat nervous. (They
tell me it will be a
whole different story once I get my own grandchildren!) So I'd have
probably opted to go
hunting with Jake and Molly. :-)

Looks perfect to me. I have a hard time finding them, but we love bratwurst
patties, pork chops (or hamburgers), and hot dogs with potato salad, pea
salad, and watermelon and/or some kind of pie.
