Bartonella - THAT's why I almost died by
Brian Link
Found out the Henry tested positive for Bartonella. Did some googling
and discovered that's the cause of "cat-scratch fever", pretty damn
serious for humans.
NOW it makes sense that when he mauled me while I (stupidly) was
separating him from killing the other cats, that I got the worst
infection...

Tiger = Houdini by
Brian Link
I was walking Tiger around the neighborhood a couple nights ago. He
loves this - and until a year or so ago we couldn't find a leash he
would endure. He would spit and fight and finally hide any time we
tried to get a collar on him.
So I found a simple string harness, and he has no problem with...

Cat with a predilection for eating inedible stuff off the floor... by
Brian Link
Louis the Bengal will attempt to eat anything that remotely resembles
food. So far, this hasn't been an issue. Our own theory is that he
fancies himself still wild, and scavenging, just to be contrary.
The other night, I found him chewing on a capsule of 5-HTP that had
fallen out of the bottle...

Good god - 5 seconds of horrible television by
Brian Link
I think I had the station on "FX", and ignored the "mature audiences"
warning. The first clip was a guy strangling, and then killing a cat.
Man - it's so weird how we're inured against simulated murders and
mutilations of humans in the media (anyone watch Annikan on fire in
"Revenge of the...

Update on Louis/Inappropriate Urination by
Brian Link
So far so good.
We have two diffusers on the first floor. Louis has sprayed (or
squatted and peed) in four locations that we're aware of, three
downstairs, one upstairs.
He has stopped peeing upstairs for reasons unknown (actually, he only
did it twice). .
Downstairs, we have a barricade in...

"Poor Henry" pics and others from Megan's by
Brian Link
Frankly, the reason I'm going on about this is cuz some people on this
newsgroup ACTUALLY LIKE cats, and don't come here to steal other
folks' lunch money. Also, since most people nowadays look at Usenet
through Google, I enjoy giving the trolls a chance to stand out in the
sunlight so folks can...

Inappropriate Urination product recommendation: Anti-Ickypoo by
Brian Link
I posted a comment to the recent "urine removal" thread, but wanted to
make an independant post, for googlers, on the topic.
We purchased a product called "Anti-Ickypoo" which, in addition to
removing urine odors, advertises itself as capable of removing the
smell of dead bodies. Good god.
After...

Midwest Cat-lovers - telethon you should know about by
Brian Link
I listen frequently to a local affiliate of Air America Radio - 950 AM
in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota (republicans should hold their
noses). They have a weekly show on Sundays called "Animalwise Radio",
hosted by a fellow named Mike Fry, who is also director of the Animal
Ark no-kill shelter....

Sympathy for Wil Wheaton.. =( by
Brian Link
Sorry - this is kind of a weird post, but I'm compelled..
How odd these Internets are.
I've recently taken to reading the blog of the actor Wil Wheaton -
best known as Wesley Crusher on Star Trek the Next Generation. It's
really fascinating, he's a celebrity, but not a bazillionaire,
creative,...

Breeding cats.. really need to cage males? =( by
Brian Link
It occurred to me, while surfing various cat sites, that if you bred
cats (only experience with breeders I've had is acquiring our
wonderful Bengal, Louis), you'd have to either have the males outdoors
or in cages, or else they'd spray everything in site!
Is that what happens? What a pity! I was...

Anesthetic before euthanasia? Cat-death musings by
Brian Link
In a previous post I read that a poster's vet "knocked out" a kitty
before delivering the fatal injection. This is a new idea to me.
After many cats put down behind closed doors, I stayed with Abbey for
her euthanasia (due to quickly spreading malignant mammarian tumors).
She was a very special...

Adopting a stray.. is a mistake.. by
Brian Link
I'm done.
I'm so demoralized about Henry. He's one of 20,000+ strays in my area
that I decided to take an interest in.. who would otherwise end up
euthanized in CO2 chambers at the local Humane Society.
But I ****ed up. He won't mix with our resident cats. I'm ready to
surrender him to a shelter...

Henry finds a new home? (long.. is anyone on a dialup anymore?) by
Brian Link
On Thursday, I'll be bringing Henry to his "foster parents".
We cuddled for a half hour on the couch tonight, and he got an
extra-long session in our bedroom/quarantine with my wife and myself.
As if to **** me off, as I was bringing Henry downstairs to do his
time in our basement with a treat, I...

Sorry - one more cute cat recollection.. by
Brian Link
When Abbey died, we knew that Tiger would be lonely. He was a farm-cat
with a lot of energy, who always tried to play with our other cats,
but was rebuffed.
So we made the decision to buy a purebreed cat whose reputed
characteristics would best match Tiger's high spirits.
We bought a Bengal,...

Eye issues - anecdote and possible tips by
Brian Link
Freaked out this afternoon when I came home from church and saw Tiger
squinting in one eye. He does this occasionally.. but this seemed a
little more urgent. After we got back from Easter dinner at my folks',
he was pawing at the eye, obviously uncomfortable. I called the
Emergency Clinic (this...

Cats' growing "intelligence" as they age. by
Brian Link
Growing up, we had several cats. In college, I lived with landlords'
cats (taking better care of them than their owners, iirc). Since
getting married and returning home 15 years ago, I've had seven cats.
Wide variety.. unexpected litters, strays, purebreeds, humane society
adoptees, etc.
One thing...

Diarrhea? by
Brian Link
Louis has had some pretty unpleasant bowel movements lately. The only
change to his routine has been a diet of Wellness dry food for about
three days while we scrambled our schedules to get out to the one
store in the vicinity which carries the wet Wellness that he's used
to.
Why would an indoor,...
