Nipsy sick? Off to the vet
Nipsy, 7-8yo long hair.
About two months ago he lost is voice for a few days. I checked on internet and it seems to often be caused by a cold and he did seem a bit more lethargic than normal so I gave him a few days and his voice sort of came back. First just a pathetic yip but soon enough he was whining just like always. He's never been a very happy cat and I used to bring him to the vet when he sounded particularly unhappy but there was never anything wrong. But he also started sneezing a few weeks back. Since this coincides with Scooter starting to live in the house, upsetting everyone, I figured he might even be allergic to Scooter. I am a bit allergic to him. Plus everyone is upset , Nipsy lesa I was away for a week and the cat sitter reported that Nipsy was sneezing quite a bit, and last night he was really sneezing a lot so off we went to the vet this morning. He seems to have lost quite a bit of weight and his temperature was low. I can't understand the weight part - he has been 15.2 for quite some time on my household scale and I weighed him a few weeks ago. I'll drop him on it tonight but if he lost weight it was pretty sudden. Since he's a big longhair it's tough to tell. Anyway, $200 for visit, CBC/Chem, T4, and Amoxicillin. Hopefully we turn up nothing bad but the vet did say a chest x-ray might be needed. Well, start up the purring machine. Hopefully nothing serious here. |

It is very worrisome when there isn't a clear diagnosis; all you can do is watch and hope :( Good news! All tests are perfectly normal. yay! I'm still out $200 but I'm happy with that given the alternative. Of course, he stopped sneezing when I put him in the car to go to the vet and there hasn't been so much as a sniffle since then. And one of the neighborhood cats (Shay) somehow has a bad foot. Apparently he couldn't even walk on it one day and when one of my neighbors tried to touch it he screamed. She gets along well with Shay; he even comes into her house sometimes to sleep over. Sort of like I'm doing with Scooter. Her husband went nuts when she suggested taking Shay to the vet - they just spent $300 when he managed to get a good gash on the head. They don't have much money so I do understand. He was walking, with a limp, on that foot two days ago so maybe it's getting better. I'll check with her today and see how he's doing. Maybe I'll have her put him in a carrier and see if I can take him to my vet for a look. In the meantime, Scooter still goes out pretty much every morning to hang with his girl and kid. He's always around the front of the house when I get home and spends the evening and night with us but I do get worried that something might happen to him outside. You're surely correct that it is dangerous for cats outside - and I think of my neighborhood as being pretty safe for a cat. In the last few weeks Pretty Girl got run over and killed, Shay got that head cut and now a foot problem, and no one seems to know what happened to the other kitten. Very possible she got adopted by a neighbor though - she was very cute. As the weather gets nicer it gets tougher to keep Scooter inside and he loves going out - he stands by the door in the morning and pushes at it. Do I have the right to make him stay inside? With Marlo, who I also pulled off the street, it was very different. She never wanted to go outside, in fact it took weeks before she was willing to go into the backyard. Scooter is a very different case. |

Or get attacked by whatever got Shay. Though that risk is diminished because Scooter is fixed and won't be as quick to fight. I wish he was having a better time inside though. Espy, Nipsy, and Marlo are making it miserable for him. I've never had a problem like this - maybe because I've never had four cats before. Nipsy is warming up just the slightest bit; they actually sniff each other and don't fight. But he doesn't mix at all with the others. He won't go sit on the window platform with them, and his eating behavior is just terrible. If he's in the bathroom, only Nipsy will come in and he won't go too near him. If, somehow, the others get in the bathroom first, Marlo sits at the door and keeps him out. Marlo! So no one is really eating well, except for Scooter who eats inside and outside the house. He loves being outside. Doesn't that count for something? His friends are outside, and I've never seen a group of cats hang together like this one. Him, baby, and Jet really stalk around the neighborhood as a unit. Even Shay and Smokey tag along sometimes. If I see one of them in one of the other backyards, I'll see the others if I watch for a bit. That's unusual. I know if he gets hit by a car that I'll feel terrible, but I see how much he loves going out and I have to weigh that too. |

"dgk" wrote I know if he gets hit by a car that I'll feel terrible, but I see how much he loves going out and I have to weigh that too. I do see your point. But it simply is not safe outside for unsupervised domesticated animals. He "loves it outside" because that is all he has known his whole life. When people have put cams on cats who spend the whole day/night outside, they find that they do the exact same things they do inside. Sleep a lot, play with whatever is at hand, eat, poop and pee. What they do not do inside is get attacked, run over, set on fire or otherwise get tortured by ****heads. This whole "I am depriving them of something if they are not outside" thing is horse****. Cats love safety and comfort. Fresh air? Put screens in and open the windows. My cats enjoy the birds and squirrells and breeze, the smells of the outdoors, the warmth of the sun, all from their window perches. They also enjoy being safe. |

I truly feel sorry for the cats because some of them really, really WANT to spend time outside! But, there are so many dangers to them outside. A cats lifespan, if lived out of doors is far less than 1/2 if allowed to spend time outside. The thing is... it will take time, patience and perseverance to keep that kitty inside, but once he gets used to it... You won't have anymore issues :) |

Like, Eastern La Mesa with all the Coyotes is a 'no' but Outlaying areas near Clemson SC would have been probably ok). Fresh air? Put screens in and open the windows. Daisy-cat is sitting in the sunroom, communing with the breeze through the window. On the other side, warming on the grass an snoozing is Cash-pup (fenced backyard). |

You're even more right because I let them into the (fenced in) backyard so they have actual contact with the outside and can dig in the dirt and roll around all they want - weather permitting. Oddly, when he goes into the back he stays right by the door on the deck and doesn't even go to the grass. He doesn't seem to wander much when out in the front though. He's always within a few houses, and our house are only 18 feet wide so that isn't really going far. When I come home he's always in the box that I originally built for him before deciding that maybe I could keep a fourth cat. He really likes being with his baby and Jet. Well, this past weekend was very marginally better. He was out during the day but in at night, and there was slightly less hissing and general mayhem. I really thought it was getting better but then, as I was getting ready to leave this morning, Marlo stood at the bedroom door and refused to let Scooter in. Hissing and noises I've never heard before Scooter arrived. And what do I do about Jet and Baby? I can't take them all in. |
