Any large houseplants that cats don't like?
 

I have three cats and lots of plants. I'm careful not to have any
that are poisonous but they don't return the favor by not eating any.
Luckily they don't seem to be interested in my orchids but I had a
very large plant that has been completely ruined by my jumping,
chomping cat. Of course there's the digging in the dirt too. I put
some screening over it but that didn't help much. She tore off the
screening which made an even bigger mess.

I want to get another large plant but wondered if there was something
that cats really don't like. What about a rubber plant? Is this a
tasty tidbit or will they tend to leave it alone? I know that one
option is to not have anything or something fake, but I really don't
want to do that.

Can anyone suggest a large plant that the might not like?

I planted an avocado seed outdoors and then brought it in for the winter.
It summered outside (in NY) for 5 years and is now almost up to the ceiling
and too big to take outside any more, I guess. Anyway, the cats starting
digging the soil out of the plant pot. I threw in some large rocks and they
stopped digging right away. It's a nice looking tree for the living room.

I can help a bit with the digging.

Cover the soil with coarse rocks to discourage them. Get some crushed
decorative rocks at the harwadre store, the ones about golfball size.

If that doesn't work, get some of the cheap clear plastic saucers
slightly larger than the top of the container. Slit the saucer to the
center and cut a hole large enough for the stem. Turn the saucer
upside down and slip it on the stem with the outer lip down over the
edge of the pot. The cats can't scratch through it and you can water
through the hole around the stem.

I haven't met a plant that my cats didn't like, but I've used heavy duty
chicken wire (the kind with the square holes, not hex) to keep them out of
the dirt. Cut it to the size of the container with a hole for the stem of
the plant, and if you jam it down right on top of the soil it shouldn't be
too easy for them to tear off. You could even combine the rock idea that
was suggested, and put a few rocks on top of the chicken wire.

Mine don't care for the mother-in-law's tongue, and that gets quite
large. I'd suggest staying away from anything fern like (ask me how I
know. . .)

On the smaller side, they don't bother my violets, and violets are on
the safe-for-cats list.

Sansaveria (mother-in-laws tongue or snake plant) is on the list of toxic
plants for cats. Good thing you cat leaves it alone.
