Hi. Long time. Nipsy, Scooter,and Baby update
 

Baby is the former feral who lives in the cave under my platform bed
where a drawer used to be. Not much has changed with her. She comes
out more and gets petted a lot but she still (after almost four years)
isn't terribly comfortable in a house.

Scooter just had all his teeth removed. Big job, around $2500 total.
He's 13 and in good health but seems to have the same disease my long
gone Jackie had in which the cat is allergic to his teeth. It's
clearly very painful and the only real cure is to remove the teeth.
That was three days ago and he's doing very well. The vet said that
he'd probably hide for three or four days but he's just as lively and
visible as ever. The pain in my wallet will likely take much longer to
subside.

Nipsy is nearing the end of his life at almost 18. He's gone from
being a hefty big cat to being a scrawny big cat. He's had something
in his left ear for years and we operated around two years ago
removing a mass that was probably a very large polyp but it never
completely went away. Now he has bad tooth issues and a mass in his
mouth - related to the ear I'm sure. His left eye is tearing much of
the time and he's always scratching at the ear and has removed all the
fur behind it.

He's sneezing a lot of the time and he is clearly uncomfortable but
he's still eating and loves his Temptations. The vet said not to do
anything about it but give him pain meds if he seems like he needs it.
I also have Zymox which is supposed to keep his ear cleaner but it's
such a torture to fill his ear with that stuff that it just isn't
worth doing since it doesn't seem to help. I don't know if it's days
or weeks or months but when he stops eating those Temptations it's
time to go.

I had a fence put up around my little yard and put chicken wire around
the top so the cats can't get out and I let them go there. Baby oddly
isn't comfortable being outside (!) so she'll go out for a few minutes
then someone will walk by and she'll run inside. Scooter will spend
all afternoon out there if I let him. Nipsy goes out for a few minutes
and comes in whining. That's not related to his failing health, he's
always been whining at me.

My mother is still kicking at 90, very old in cat years. Her body is
failing in various ways but that mind is still sharp and that's what
counts. No point in having a healthy body and failing brain. Still,
she has difficulty having any energy in the afternoon although she's
ok in the morning. She hardly sleeps at all, and not because she wants
to be up. That's seems to be a common affliction among the elderly.

That's the big news, I'm catching up on some of the older threads.

Nipsy's 18 years is a good age but it's a shame he's feeling so unwell.

Maybe in time, Baby will feel more comfortable in your yard in time.

You Mother is doing well too. I think it's more than understandable that
she's tired in the afternoon. It's great that she's still so sharp
mentally.

Thanks, good to hear from you. Most of my mornings are spent playing
tennis, and one of the best women players is a bit of a PITA, but I
just found out that she feeds some colonies and does TNR. I spoke to
her and offered to help when needed. She says there's a big colony not
too far away and she'd like to TNR it, but it's tough unless you're
the regular feeder and can withhold food so they'll enter the traps.
Still, it's nice to find someone who does the same sort of stuff.
