Cats and Radio
 

In a thread on burglary, the excellent suggestion was made of leaving on
a radio or TV when hoomins are not in the house. The question arises as
to programming.

Mr. Clark, who operates on the classic principle of the senior
noncommissioned officer who tells a new military commander, "Sir, you
COMMAND this unit. I RUN it."

The History Channel. BBC comedy also might appeal to him.
Music: an eclectic mixture of military marches, lullabies (he's
devoted to two-and-four-legged kittens) and perhaps precise
classical music. I can see him appreciating Mozart and Bach.

Self-help shows, but I think recognizing Jerry Springer is
not a good resource

As far as TV goes:
Animal Planet, of course!
Also, the "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" improv comedy show -- Tucker always
watches it with us!

And as for radio or CDs:
The Lord of the Rings soundtracks
and classical music (again, Tucker especially loves music)
Christine and Omar, Oreo, Midnight, Robin & Tucker

And your furkids' preferences?

All of our furkids love Animal planet, though we had the cable removed
over a year ago and they're getting used to talk shows instead. They
love "Cops", especially the black and whites (and Pine Cone of course).
Action shows are very popular with them, with cartoons being NOT on
the watch list. Jerry Springer, Montel Williams, Maury, and The View
are on the hiss list, but Oprah is very well liked. They also watch
Judge Joe Brown, Judge Judy, Peoples Court, and Divorce Court. I think
they like the dramatics.

As to music. They all like various classical Rock music, especially the
Doobie Brothers, Bee Gees, and John Denver (I suspect because he was an
advocate for animals of all types). They love Neil Diamond, Carpenters,
and soothing seventies music. They do NOT like KC and the Sunshine
Band. The hiss list includes Heavy metal, but they enjoy Meatloaf. I
suspect that is because of the food factor.

I can also get them to listen to Celtic and Classical music, but, like
me they hiss at opera. They HATE Celine Dion, Barbara Streisand, and
other high pitched voices. Unfortunately Manheim Steamroller is among
that group because of all the high pitched instruments that they use.
Sad, as Manheim Steamroller is one of our favorites.

Pine Cone has his own music list. He likes punk, techno, and celtic
music. He LOVES Meatloaf, and seems to glory in his bad boy image. I'm
afraid to show him a James Dean movie, as he'd probably start sauntering
around the house wearing a leather jacket and sneering around the
cigarette hanging out of his mouth.

Hmmm. I was listening to oldies internet radio, and discovered my cats hate
Donnie Osmond. Honest. They fled the room with their ears back.
When I used to play Pavarotti, particularly Nessum Dorma, Cherokee used to get
in the middle of the floor and roll over on his back. I say he loved it. DH
says it was cat-talk for "If it thinks I"m dead, it will go away."
My daughter says locking cats up in a carrier for TED, and making them listen
to Harry Chapin all the way in the car is borderline animal abuse.

I'm thinking if the point was to deter burglars, cartoons and other
children's programming would be best. That would indicate there was more
than one person home, likely including an awake young adult.

For the same reason Golden Girls would likely be a poor choice.

Or old westerns.

Vaguely apropos, there was a privately made tape, circulating among
classical music stations, of something called "The Cat Cantata". It
consisted of Beverly Sills and Elizabeth Schwarzkopf meowing at one
another, in top operatic form.

Unfortunately, I never had advance warning of when it was going to be
played so I could record it. Does anyone know if it's available?

Brenna likes Enya, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, The male singer with the
Glenn Miller Orchestra (whose name completely escapes me right now), and
similar "golden-oldies" and new agey stuff.
Brenna *does not* like Dean Martin, Rock (hard, soft, or otherwise),
country/western, too much talking - play the darn music already!!

It's by Rossini, who was a cat lover- the name is "Aria per Due
Gatte." I sang it myself in college. The recording was really
Schwarzkopf with Victoria De Los Angeles. I think it's out of print,
but I'll check.
