Facebook (Again)

Early this morning I got a flood of emails/copies of posts from members of
the rpca facebook group. This has never happened to me in the past. In
fact, I thought I'd deactivated my account last year. I've deactivated it
again.

To those whose FB accounts sent me purr requests... of course you have them.
But please understand. I don't use FB. I don't like FB.

There's deactivate and delete. To delete it completely, you have to fly
through rings and hoops to accomplish it. I think you're gone now because
I got a message that we were no longer "friends".

I entirely agree with Jill! God knows we have little enough privacy as
it is, these days. (Does anyone not realize that anyone with the
know-how can find out ANYTHING about ANYONE via the Internet?) At least
I can avoid "social networking" via Facebook and Twitter.

How kind of FB to inform you we're no longer friends! Yet another reason to
dislike FB. It's not the members I dislike, it's FB itself. I still like
you!

It's not FB who told me, but a third party application I use which
simplifies FB and makes it possible for me to change FB more to my liking.

Speaking of Facebook, is there anybody here who can tell me if it's possible
to send a private message to a "friend"? I got a notice that one of my
"friends" is having a birthday this week. I don't recognize the name. I
have a number of friends from this group whose names I don't know, but when
I saw a list of mutual friends, I realized they must be from here. However,
there are only two mutual friends with this person. One is from this group,
but another is a Toastmaster.

I'd like to go through my list and, if I can't figure out how I know the
person, send them a message that didn't appear on Facebook, asking how I
know them or if they'd mind if I "unfriend" them. I don't want to hurt
anybody's feelings by just "unfriending" to start with.

Very easy. Click on that friends' name, now look upper right and you'll
see "message". Click that, and a window will open, pre-addressed, for
you to write a private message, then click "send". When you receive a
message, the icon (upper left) between "friend request" and
"notifications" will light up red.

Absolutely. Click on their name to bring up their page. When that comes up,
look to the right, on the same line as your friend's name, and you should
see a button labeled "Message". Click on that and a dialog will come up where
you can address a message to that person and send it.

You can also "hide" someone from your newsfeed, so that they're still your
friend, but you aren't seeing their posts. To do that, click on your own
name, to bring up your wall. On the left side, underneath your photo, there's
a list that has stuff like "info," "photos," "notes," etc. Click on "Friends."
That will bring up your friends list. Then find the name of someone whose
posts you don't want to read. In that row, on the right, there's a button
labeled "Friends." Hover the mouse over that button (you don't have to click),
and you'll see a menu open under the button. In the menu there's an item
"Show in News Feed". It should be checked and bold. Just select that item
to turn that feature off. (It will then be unchecked, not bold.) Note: if
"Show in News Feed" isn't in the list, then select "show all lists" and it
will appear.

I've never done any of these things myself, because the last time I used
FB, which was not that long ago, the procedure for hiding someone's posts
from your newsfeed (while keeping them "friended") was completely different.
In order to write the above, I first had to go through the steps a few
times just to be sure I was telling you the right thing. I give these
instructions about a week before they become outdated. :) So you might
want to do this soon, before the next batch of unannounced and unexplained
changes is visited on the FB user interface...
