As some of you may know after almost 2 years of trying I finally got a permanent job!

Doing the paperwork there's some sort of insurance policy so if I die in service there will be money to be paid out and I get to nominate who gets what share

So a third each to both my brothers so they can cover the funeral costs and the other third..

The system doesn't let me enter a third so I end up calling HR.

Their system only lets me enter 2 names but the HR person can override the system:

The conversation went: "Okay so who do you want to give the last third to?"

"My friend Jim Martin"

"You've got him down as the person to contact in an emergency? So is he your partner?"

"No he's just a very good friend who has promised me if anything happens to me he will give my cats a good home with him and since that means he'll have two extra mouths to feed and vet bills etc I want him to have the money so he won't be out of pocket"

The reply was: "That's a very weird reason"

I think my reply was along the lines of "What is weird about making sure a friend isn't put out of pocket and providing for my cats?"

Obviously the person you spoke to didn't know the pleasures of being
owned by cats. It isn't weird to me, and probably not to any one who
posts here.

It doesn't sound weird to me at all. And frankly, it's none of HR's
business who your beneficiaries are or why you might want to leave them
some money!

Thanks it's sorta not a new job really I temped there in May-June for 6 weeks and loved it alas the agency were creaming off nearly half the hourly fee for their share. My boss thought I was on decent money and was horrified when he found out how much the agency were actually giving me. In the end I had to leave because someone else offered me 20% an hour plus paid leave but the job was going permanent and I applied for it and got it.

Congrats on the 'new' job. Job hunting sucks, especially as you get older.

Ignore the HR comment, as long as you're happy with your decision that's all that matters. BTW HR is not there for you, they are all about the company. In fact a lot of firms have outsourced to consulting scum. I was consulting scum, so I know. :-)

I don't think that's weird at all, but I'm a catslave too. The "death
in service" clause applies to me up to 10 years after retirement so is
still in place. It's not an insurance policy, AIUI it's part of your
salary that you would have got, at least for local government employees,
but NHS is broadly similar usually.
To allocate some "death in service" payout to someone who has promised
to look after your cats after you've passed away is a good thing. It's
not weird. Had I died (as doctors said I would) in 2005, two people on
the group offered to take Boyfie & KFC. I made some financial provision
for them (which they don't know about but will now) but fortunately I
made it.

And we're all glad you did make it, Tina.

I see nothing wrong in designating beneficiaries for taking care of our
beloved cats. I do find it odd HR questioned Lesley's reason for adding
her friend Jim. In fact, it is none of their business why.

What's weird is for the person to make that comment.
