When there was no commercial cat food.......
Please help my research for cat food. Before lots of people started
feeding their cat commercial cat food, (crunchy type or canned food) what were they feeding their cat? Is there such a thing like a traditional "home made" cat food? If you were living with a cat/cats back in those days, what did you usually end up feeding them? Thank you very much for your help! Marie |

Marie I'm not quite that old, but I talked to dad... He says that his gramma used to cook oatmeal and stewed meats. But her cats were also expected to hunt and eat what they killed, so they probably got more "proper" nutrition that way. The same things dogs ate - meat and table scraps. Cats also hunted and killed their own food, such as birds and mice. They still do in many places. Some people still feed a raw, natural diet. I believe that cats have traditionally been "mousers", killing rodents and
other small animals that poeple considered pests. Even today, it's not at all unusual to find "barn cats" out in the countryside, who primarily eat mice and snakes. The farmer (or rancher, etc) continues to rely on these animals to keep the barns and silos free from mice that could ruin stored crops and spread disease, and to keep the barns free from snakes that spook the cows, horses, etc. My Grandmother has an approximately 17 year old cat (Fat Cat) that turned up as a stray 16 years ago when she lived out in the country, and it was always a "barn cat", but it did get table scraps as a supplement, and fresh water. Grandma moved to a small town to be closer to the doctor's office 4 years ago, and she took the cat with her. Fat Cat now lives in the storage shed in the back yard, with her own kitty door entrance, a straw bed, and heat lamp. She eats moistened cat kibble (has a difficult time with hard food in her old age) and comes onto the patio every afternoon to sunbathe and get her tummy rubbed. She never leaves the back yard... All in all, sounds like she's had a pretty good kitty life. |

My childhood cat, in the late 1930s and the '40s, was a city boy (neutered) & spent more time indoors than out, but he still managed to catch mice. Kitty-Boy didn't eat them, though. He brought them in, sometimes still kicking, and presented them to my father. Once he hid a dead one, probably captured in the basement, under a corner of the Oriental rug in the living room. I presume he meant to give it to my father when he got home from work. But Kitty-Boy forgot about the mouse until the stench compelled us humans to organize a search party! We fed Kitty-Boy Rival dog food (canned) and table scraps. Commercial cat food didn't exist back then. Once a week I was sent to the butcher shop for his special treat -- lamb's kidneys. We minced the kidneys, and the cat wolfed them down raw. We also gave him milk or cream frequently. I don't remember that it gave him any problems with diarrhea. Kitty-Boy lived for 11 years, in good health until he developed urinary blockage. There was no treatment back then, so he was euthanized.
