scratched eye
 

About two months ago my Reggie's eye got infected. Turned out another
cat scratched him -- Simon, our youngest, who has been acting up a lot,
even before we got a new cat.
The vet gave us some cream to put in Reggie's eye and it helped but
never fully cleared it up. He still favors the eye and it runs
occasionally. When I clean under his eye sometimes there's some pink on
the tissue, which I hope is the cream and not blood (I can't imagine blood
would be pink).
The vet will see him early next week but I was curious if anyone else
has had a kitty with something similar? If the cream didn't work, what
might they try next? An antibiotic? I'm worried about him even though
the vet doesn't consider it very serious.

My Shamrock had his eye "hooked" by his "brother" a few months ago.
Brother had claw hooked so tight in Shamrock's eyelid that I had to
physically remove it (glad I was here). But the damage was done. I
didn't realize he got the conjunctiva with the claw through the
upper "eyelid" and it seemed ok at first; I thought it was on his
forehead. Next day, Shamrock had "cherry eye". Off to the vet - no
scratch on the cornea, it was the conjunctiva. Vet prescribed
clavimox and eyedrops that had to be put in 3x per day. The eyedrop
box says the brand is "Darby" and the drops are "Neomycin and
Polymyxin B sulfates and Gramicidin Ophthalmic Solution USP". As
bad as his eye looked the day after the hooking, it was clear again
before the clavimox was even gone.

As for the "pink", not sure. Tears contain protein I believe, and
its dark enough to stain fur so it might look pinkish in some
cases.

My cats all have their claws clipped every other week after that
incident.

I wonder why your vet doesn't think its serious? Have you been
using the cream for all of these two months?

Get a referral to the vet equivalent of an eye doctor.

You want a specialist for this, not general practice.

That might be it, thanks. Reggie's eye looks better today.

Yes, and it's been worrying me. My hubby took care of this for the most
part, because I had a family illness and death to deal with, and I
suddenly realized that it's been 2 months. He said the vet told him it
wasn't serious because the cornea wasn't cut, it was a superficial cut I
guess. That didn't make much sense to me, but he has good vibes from the
vet.
Today Reggie's eye looks a lot better and he hasn't had the cream for a
day, so I don't know. He's till going to the vet Monday.

Well, we finally got Reggie to the vet, and the vet thinks an infected
tooth is keeping the eye infection going, so he goes into surgery Monday.
He can't eat anything after 10:00 PM Sunday, and with 4 cats, that's going
to be a real hoot. I hope I make it through the night without them
nibbling my toes in hunger.
