Cat pees when you pick her up

We have a female cat, just over 1 year old, that we adopted about 4
months ago. A few weeks after we adopted her we discovered blood in her
urine and took her ot the vet. She was prescribed antibiotix, which
seemed to help for a while. A month or so after we finished the
antibiotics she started showing symptoms again, so we had a culture and
sensitivity test done on her urine and discovered there is no bacteria.
She was put on Amitriptyline gel and we have been giving her this for 2
weeks now. She seems better in most ways (has stopped peeing over the
edge of the little box, no blood in urine, almost 100% back to her
playful, affectionate self) except for 1 problem. Three times now in
the last 5 days she has pee'ed when we pick her up. I'm not talking a
dribble either - it's a good stream! The vet had never heard of this
happening. I was wondering if anyone out there had experienced anything
like this.

She does have other odd symptoms that may/may not be associated with
her bladder problems: she grooms herself a lot, also scratches a lot
(she does not have fleas - we've had her checked). Also, she has had
runny stools ever since she went off of the first round of antibitoics
(we have given her acidophilous and pro-biotics, but this has not
cleared up).

Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jacqueline

Then don't pick her up?

You might think that picking up a cat is wonderful, but it can be
very stressful for the cat. Often times picking up a cat can mean
putting your face in the cat's face and that adds to the stress.

I'm not being cat romantic, I'm simply trying to help avoid the
problem. Understanding your cat is much easier than vice versa.

Sometimes we cannot do the things we as humans normally associate
with sharing love and affection, but there are workarounds.

Good luck.

Thanks for your response. I would agree that if she started this
behaviour from the time we got her, I would not be concerned, but as
she has cystitis and is on medication and has other symptoms that are
not normal, I keep thinking that something is causing this. She used to
enjoy being picked up and petted, and still seems to... until she pees!

Hi Jacqueline,

I wonder if her bladder is still sore and swollen, but might not be
bleeding. When you pick her up, it might put too much pressure on her
bladder right now. They can also have flare-ups under stress, has
anything stressful happened lately, any new animals, etc?

I'm glad you're taking such good care of her, and looking for the
answers. You might want to get a second vet opinion (and mention those
other symptoms) to make sure there's not another way to help her, or
that something is being missed.

Good luck,

Rhonda

I have to agree with Rhonda. I would definitely want to have her
checked by another vet. Sometimes what one vet misses, another may
find, and I have also found some vets are better at treating cats than
others. Good luck and keep us posted.

Very true what you post I found. The vet does not sound good. What did
the urinanalysis say? Did you see the very long thread on problems with
crystals or stones and food? Too often the vets give antibiotics but
that may be irrelevant unless there is a bacterial infection present.
If the cat is acting contrary, she may be ill. Has she been also
checked for parasites? Has she been tested for things like
cryptosporidium or giardia? I ask because around here the vets don't
check. They assume there are not any parasites. WRONG. So I suggested
to someone whose cat was also scratching away fur and just miserable
that she had parasites. She went to the very big vet hospital, and sure
enough the cat had parasites. And they did not charge her any more than
the previous vets who completely missed the diagnosis. Now the cat is
more social, not being by herself in one room and ignoring the other
cats, and the cat is happy. That was her third vet she had to see. The
first two just blew it off like, change her food. It takes thought and
energy to try to sort out these problems. I'm not sure about the tests
for these protozoan parasites. I don't know if it's a blood test. I
don't think it's a fecal sample test. Anyone know?

Where did the parasites come from? They can come from the municipal
water supply. Apparently it's quite common but not a problem for people
with healthy immune systems. Many water filters will take care of these
parasites if they have small pores, like 0.5 to 1 micron. Usually a
fine mesh covering around the charcoal filter will take care of these
protozoan parasites.

Thanks so much for all of your responses. There were tests done on her
stool and everything was apparently fine.

I think I'll be trying to find a vet with a more "holistic" approach. I
keep thinking that treating 1 symptoms is just going to make things
worse, and since all of these symptoms have developed over the last 2
months I would be inclined to think that at least some of them might be
related.

I don't know if she was checked for cryptosporidium or giardia - I'll
look in to that.

Thanks again everyone!
