low vision/blindness in cat
 

I have just gotten another cat, Rusty who is my fifth, and I knew from the
beginning that
he had low vision or was blind. Now my question is, Are there any good
websites
with advice.

Right now he is in a room by himself to get used to the area, I brought him
up
to the living room with me 2 nights in a row, and he did really great, just
sitting
in my lap or next to me in the rocker.

I think he will be a love bug, but since he is new to the house, I know I
need
to take it slow with introducing him to the house and the other cats.

Our Sylvie, who recently went to RB from old age, was totally blind; we took
her in as stray (she wasn't bllind then; vet said both retinas detached
later) in '93 or so; she lived many years w/Maluce (perfect vision, loner
personality) and Rowdy (left eye blind, obnoxious playful
personality) as well as two other mellow male cats, DurDur and Oliver
(purebred Oriental Shorthair, typical Siamese personality). DurDur and
Oliver went to RB before Sylvie got blind but she was easygoing and never
fought w/anybody. Vet said as long as nothing much moved in the house she'd
always be able to find litterbox and food/water bowls, and it was true. She
somehow always knew when I was sitting somewhere and would come for love
sessions when she found me. The only way she *ever* went outside was with me
sitting next to them as they spent an afternoon chewing grass all in a large
d-pet steel cage w/plastic bottom tray removed.
When we moved to MileHigh we could no longer do that; but the cats seemed to
miss it much less than I did.
Your new cat will get used to the *lay of the land* inside your house.

I don't know of any websites, but we had a cat who went blind. She did
very well without her vision, even jumping up and down from our bed.

One thing to remember is not to change the furniture around if possible,
or leave boxes, etc., where he might unexpectantly bump into them. As
long as he knows where the food, water, and litter box is, he should do
fine.

I just noticed today, that after a week under a rocking chair, he was
sitting
in another chair when I saw him this morning, so I think he is making
progress, and
will eventually venture out, but it will take him time, I know, to venture
up the stairs.

He has another 2 floors to explore.
