Marlo returns?
 

Not the way we were planning it, which was Mom keeping Marlo
indefinitely. But we have a big hurricane bearing down on us and,
while we don't think it will hit us directly, it's going to be bad.
Mom doesn't want to stay at her house alone, and I want to be in mine
since I have three cats to keep an eye on, so it looks like Mom and
Marlo will be moving in to my house for at least the day of the storm.

And if we lose power for a few days, which is very likely, Mom and
Marlo will probably stay for a while. I'm thinking that we'll keep
Marlo (and Mom) in the spare bedroom, but I'll probably let Mom come
out. Marlo may just stay in that room since I'm not sure that I want
her mixing with the other cats, particularly Baby.

Naturally we have a bunch of food and water, and lots of batteries and
lanterns and stuff. I'm charging all the MP3 players and Kindles, and
I have a solar charger that will charge phones. I also have a jump
starter for the car that will charge cell phones so I can't think of
much else we can do. The laptop is charging but without internet it
won't be of too much use.

Well, that's the story. I'll try to check in tomorrow since the
hurricane shouldn't hit before Thursday, but if you don't hear from me
for a few days, you know why.

I think you'll ALL be fine, and DON'T forget to have your cellphone
fully charged before the power goes out.

It sounds as though you all have a pretty rough time ahead. I hope it
turns out not to be as bad as it looks as though it might be.

Check in when you can, because we're all concerned. However, we
understand that it may not be possible for a while.

I hope you, your mother and all the cats weather the storm without too
much distress.

Good luck with everything. I will keep you in my thoughts and hope
everything goes well. It's a good idea to keep Marlo in a separate
room, and it sounds as if you are well prepared. Be sure to keep
flashlights close by so you can grab one in the dark, if needed. I was
without power twice from residual damage from hurricanes. It was
extremely hot, and I had some battery powered fans. They were a life
saver. Do you have anything like that available?

Please keep us updated, although I know from experience that you may
lose power.

Best of luck! I'm in southern South Carolina. I've been watching the
Hurricane Matthew storm track. It's actually a pretty slow-moving
hurricane. Strong, but slow.

You, your mom and the cats, I worry about. And Marlo and your mom
sharing a room, they've sort of bonded; maybe less stressful for them
to share a room and keep the other cats out. While you keep an eye on
the storm. Be Safe!

Where I live in terms of the storm I think the government is
overreacting. The Governor issued an evacuation order today. The
schools are closed.

I'm looking at weather maps, looking outside. It's partly cloudy with a
chance of rain.

Satellite and graphic images, Hurricane Matthew is HUGE, yes. But it's
not expected to get anywhere near the South Carolina coast until Friday.
It's moving very slowly north/northeast at 9-10 MPH.

Buffy and I aren't going anywhere.

Ah, hurricane season. I forget how long ago you moved there, is this
your first autumn in FL? It sounds like you're very well prepared. And
I don't know how you connect to the Internet, but if you go through
a land line, you could still have access - electricity might go out, but
maybe not phones. On the other hand, if you have wireless inside your
house (like most people do), you'd need electricity for that.

I think it's very nice of you to let your mom come out of the spare
room from time to time. :)

Isn't slow-moving a bad thing? Storms do a lot more damage when they
stop and hang out in an area for a while, than they would do if they just
kept moving by.

I dunno. I've lived here for years and never had to leave. Lots of the
neighbors packed up and left. I'm just sitting here looking at a whole
lot of nothing in terms of weather. It's not even raining but people
left in droves.

I'm prepared to hunker down; I always am. I'm less prepared to try to
figure out where the heck I'd actually *go* with a cat in tow. 100
miles inland to... where?

Well, that's true. Years ago my mom and two sisters (and associated SO's)
packed up from the east coast of Florida and drove to Georgia... without a
plan for where they would stay. The ended up at a church where a pastor
was providing sleeping space for hurricane "refugees" from Florida. This
was hurricane Andrew, btw, one of the notorious ones.

Unfortunately, THAT is likely to change tomorrow, and especially Friday.

This is a very dangerous storm, and will likely cause significant
damage.
