Scratchin post, carpet or just wood?
 

I see these very expensive scratching posts at Petsmart.

I was thinking of making my own.

Does carpet really provide a scratching post for the cats? These things
they sell look like fun toys for the cat but do they really provide a
scrathin post. I thought they do that to sharpen and clean their claws.
Would a soft wooden post be a better choice? I dont see any made of just
wood. Some had rope wrapped around which seemed a better idea the carpet.

truth is Dyna, I had every intention of getting Miss Violette's claws stolen
when I got fixed what wasn't broken on her. Before we did that furry and I
looked on the net and were so horrified at what furry saw we did not let the
ted steal her claws or TV or OEJ's either. Since I had not discouraged them
very much from scratching thinking I would get new furniture after their
claws were stolen, I blew it. The loss of some furniture was a small price
to pay for such a lesson though. Soft

I lucked out, Anaïs is such a good girl - she doesn't damage anything! I
live in a pre-war apartment with hardwood floors, and only one rug - an IKEA
cheapie. Wouldn't you know, she uses it, and it alone to "unsheath" her old
claws, and that's just fine with me. She's never used the furniture, or -
thank Bast - the waterbed.

We have had a water bed for the entire seven years violette has been here,
all five sleep with us and that has never been an issue. I know it was my
fault and I accept that. I would be happy if they used the carpet but
nobody does. soft

When I was growing up, there were a couple of waterbeds in the family,
and I don't recall cat claws ever causing trouble [the beds were
