Add a second box. Many cats prefer one for peeing and one for pooping.

I agree! This is often the only problem. Also, make sure that both boxes
are cleaned frequently. I would start with the boxes close together, but
you may need to experiment. Some cats prefer to have them in different
rooms -- and you might even need to experiment with different types of
litter.
