Deep sympathy. Clifford died from bladder cancer, and, when I searched
the research literature, found there had been more treatments
experimentally developed for dogs than cats. One promising area is to
sensitize the tumor with dyes, and then hit it with laser radiation
passed into the bladder through optical fiber. You might also check
with veterinary schools to find the status of such approaches.

Again, I'm more familiar with bladder cancer in cats. Some relief can
come quickly from a combination of a corticosteroid such as prednisone
and a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory such as piroxicam. These quickly
relieve irritation from the tumor against the bladder wall. Although
the shrinkage may be temporary, the pain relief lasts longer.

With Clifford, this was used in an attempt to strengthen him for the
more potent chemotherapeutic drugs. I can't speak definitively for
dogs, but the veterinary medical oncologist swore up and down that some
of the agents used, such as cisplatin, do not have the side effects in
cats that they do in humans. I'd think long and hard before agreeing
to therapy, for myself, with cisplatin, but I was satisfied that it
could be used effectively in cats.
