I've often wondered about that, too, being a neurotic worrier. I live in
a second-floor apt with a balcony, but I'd probably just let them out
the door and hopefully they wouldn't go too far. They are just awful
about getting into the carriers, I have to get someone to come and help
me whenever they need to go to the vet. I've tried leaving the carriers
out so they can get used to them, but they've never bought into that!
Hopefully such a disaster will never happen but it is good to be prepared.
