Whenever Nashville is hit by an ice storm, there always seems to be a
disproportiionate number of pickup trucks and SUVs among the vehicles
that end up in ditches. I suspect this is because the drivers are
finding out the hard way that, while 4-wheel drive makes it less
likely that you will lose traction while accelerating or going at a
steady rate of speed, it doesn't give you any particular advantage
while braking (since everyone has 4-wheel braking). The 4-wheel
drive vehicles tend to be driven faster on slippery surfaces than the
2-wheel drive vehicles, and thus are more likely to end up off the
road in a ditch.
