THIS FROM YAHOO NEWS

In what should come as no surprise to many people living in the United
States in the last month or so, the first half of 2012 was officially the
hottest ever recorded.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA),
the
period from January through June was "the warmest first half of any year on
record for the contiguous United States."
The average temperature was 52.9 degrees Fahrenheit, or 4.5 degrees above
average, the NOAA said on Monday.
Twenty-eight states east of the Rockies set temperature records for the
six-month period. The 12 months ending on June 30 was the warmest
12-month period of any 12 months on record, according to the NOAA.
Record-breaking temperatures blistered most of the United States in June,
with more than 170 all-time temperature records broken or tied during the
month. On June 28 in Norton, Kansas, for instance, the temperature reached
118 degrees, an all-time high. On June 26, Red Willow, Nebraska, set a
temperature record of 115 degrees, eclipsing the 114-degree mark set in
1932.
The first six months of the year were also drier than most, with
precipitation totals 1.62 inches below average.
According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, more than half of the country (56
percent) experienced drought conditions--the largest percentage in the
12-year history of the service.
The NOAA report comes on the heels of a heat wave that's been blamed for at
least 30 deaths and shattered more than 3,000 temperature records in July
alone.

Not all states have experienced the record-breaking heat, however.
Washington had its seventh coolest June on record, the NOAA said.
That's the State where I live
Hope the rest of you can keep cool, somehow
Cool hugs

It was VERY hot last week here, and got up to 101F on the Fourth of
July, and 100F three other days, and it was VERY humid, too. I didn't
go to watch the fireworks, like I have every year for many decades.

That is WAY too hot, Gandalf!!! Wow. Sorry you missed the fireworks on the
4th
I'm surprised, with the heat, that they were even done.

I have a small (5000 BTU) window air conditioner in my bedroom, and
when it gets really hot, I spend a LOT of time there. I'm sure my
electrical bill will be higher, but just cooling one small room
shouldn't cost too much money, I hope.

I hope you can keep cool too and that it won't cost too much either.

There is a BIG window air conditioner that is built into the window in
the dining room, where Lorelei's tall cat tree is. It was there when I
bought the house in 1979, so it is very old now. It uses a LOT of
electricity, and I haven't even turned it on for the last three summers.

We have one of those in the bedroom and use it IF the heat become
unbearable.
Right now, at 3:30 pm it is 68 degrees out.

My Mother, who is 89 years old now, and has many, many health problems,
suffers very badly in the hot weather. She has one of those 'saver
switches' that turns her whole house air conditioning off for 30 minuets
out of every hour on really hot days, and then her AC can't keep up with
the heat.

I'm really sorry to hear that

I really don't think it's worth saving just 15% of her electricity bill,
for the three hottest months, to be so miserable, when it gets really
hot outside.

I agree with you Gandalf.

I have tried to convince her to get a portable air conditioner for her
bedroom, but she doesn't like the idea.

I'd insist!!!!
