Turns out Smudge had an abcessed wound on her chest. It has mostly
drained since I first discovered it, at which time it was the size of
an extremely large grape, or very small chicken egg. By the time I
brought her to the vet today, it had gotten very small, but the fur
at that spot was all matted and clumped.

Glad it was nothing more serious! Undiscovered abscesses DO tend to burst
and drain by themselves (and hopefully heal, as well), but it's good you
got her to the vet.

Our Sam had so many abscesses like this over eighteen or so years, If they
opened on their own and weren't too close to his eyes, I'd just squirt
Neosporin in them and keep an eye on them to be sure they were healing
properly.

He liked to pick fights. (so did his playmates)
