That's the reason I put a collar on my cats, so they can never be
mistaken for a feral. BF arrived with a collar and lost it, and it took
me weeks to get him to allow me to put another one on.
One night he seemed braver than normal, and was on my armchair very late.
I stayed up until 3 a.m., but I got one on him in the end.
They cannot get strung up by them, they have an elastic insert.
When you get him back you might think about putting a collar on, if he'll
let you, or if not, trap him up somehow and take him to the vet to have a
microchip in.

What really sucks is this was all the day before I was going to take him
to the shelter (where I volunteer) to see the vet, get microchipped, and
get his annual shots. I bought a collar and name tag for him a couple
weeks ago and I've been trying to put it on him. I never really worried
about collaring him because he's never shown any interest in the door.

Please don't beat yourself up about it, Kelly, these things happen despite
our best intentions.
It must be a similar sort of law that made my dogs only get seriously ill on
a Sunday, or national holiday when the vet costs megabucks. One of my
whippets once burst her spleen on Easter Sunday. I nearly fainted when I
got the read-out on the invoice. The good news was that she lived.
