My mother's dog
My poor mother is terribly worried about her toy poodle, Cricket. Yesterday
she was cleaning out her refrigerator and found some meat that wasn't spoiled, but it was dried out. She gave Cricket a piece of the meat, and it got stuck partway down her esophagus. As you may know, my mother lives in a small town which is a six-hour drive from the nearest city. The only vet in town was on vacation, and didn't get back until this evening. My brother-in-law, who is the vet's assistant, tried to help, but there wasn't much he could do. He did go on line and learn that she shouldn't give Cricket anything to eat or drink for 24 hours. She could see that Cricket was thirsty, so she did give her a little water, but she just vomited it up. The vet finally got home around 7 this evening, and returned the message my BIL had left for him. He told John (BIL) to bring Cricket right in for x-rays. The x-rays showed that the problem was indeed the piece of meat stuck in the esophagus. The vet isn't sure if he can handle it, so he's going to call a specialist in the morning. They may have to take Cricket to Anchorage for the specialist to do it. That creates some real logistical problems, because the planes haven't been flying in or out of Valdez. Even if they do fly tomorrow, there is the need for somebody to go along. My mother is so tottery she needs a wheelchair in the airport, at the very least. Somebody is needed to push the wheelchair, and somebody to carry the dog crate. My sister could and would take the time off, although she is a teacher and school just started a couple of weeks ago, but she has a really bad knee and is on crutches. My BIL more or less expects to go, but they have a backlog of patients since the vet has been away, and I don't know if he can be spared. So everything is very much in the air at the moment. In the meantime, poor Cricket is alternately, choking, crying, hunting for water, and trying to find a comfortable place to lie. Neither she nor my mother got much sleep last night, and they probably won't tonight either. :-( -- Joy |
