I didn't realize that "Big Russ" was still alive and reasonably well
until, literally, a moment ago, as I was reading a press report about
Russert's death. There is nothing worse for a family, I believe, than
parents outliving their children. It's happened in my own family,
twice, and it's an awful thing. It just shouldn't happen.

Russert just returned from Italy, where he and his wife and son were
celebrating his son's graduation from Boston College. Russert's son and
wife are either still in Italy or on their way home, having heard the
news, at this very moment.

There is some speculation that he may have had an embolism form due to
sitting for so long on the long plane flight.

I could be wrong Cory but I think his father died a few years ago. I loaned
the book to someone and will have to wait until it comes home to be sure.
His Dad was a good man, common sense and played a big part in the way his
son turned out.

Yeah, that's right. DH is still unsettled and sad about our neighbor
passing away a few days ago. We've lost 2 people in the 55+ trailer park in
the last 2 weeks.

TIME forgot his son, Luke, in the "survived by" category, though, but
given how suddenly all of this happened, I'll forgive 'em.

Russert had just moved his father to a different facility a couple of
weeks ago. I believe it is in Boston.

The number of tributes from well-known people that MSNBC has published
on their website is staggering, and while a few of them are pretty
short, they are all heaping tons of praise on the journalist, as well as
the man, that Russert was.

These roundtable discussions like MTP are simply not my cup of tea. I
don't watch THIS WEEK (with G. Stephanopoulous) or FACE THE NATION,
either, simply because I'm not wild about the format. Thus, the only
times I got to see Russert's work was when he was moderating debates or
doing election coverage for NBC (like at a convention or a primary
election or the like). I found him to be INCREDIBLY articulate and
bright, not to mention passionate. I now wish that I had watched more
of his work.
