help, kitty with abscess
Hi anybody,
my boy has an abscess on the right side of his jaw. this time yesterday it was about the size of a pea. now its like a stack of three quarters. it is cantered on the outside of his jawbone just under the rear molar. then it spread forward toward his chin. he's only a year and a half old, an outdoor cat, he eats dry food, and he's always been perfectly healthy. could such an abscess have started in his tooth? is it likely to break on its own? thanx, Louie |

Follow this *very* closely: The gum tissues have an extensive blood supply, and the bacteria involved in oral infections can easily enter the blood stream leading to valvular heart disease, kidney disease, hepatitis, joint disease, to name a few -- not to mention that your cat is probably in constant pain. Your cat needs to be seen by a vet *immediately* -- Please do not wait another minute. |

General vets do dentistry; you don't need to take him to a vet specializing in dentistry if he has an abscessed tooth. Good luck; I hope the infection - whatever its cause - gets zapped easily. thanx, Cathy, it will, although the bill is gonna be tough. that's life, louie |

Hi Louie,
Your cats abscess could have many causes. It could have started in the tooth or be from a cat bite/scratch or a piece of food lodged in a tooth etc. Whatever the cause it needs to be treated. It needs to be drained so a visit to your vet would be adviseable. He has infection there and antibiotics will be needed to prevent the infection from spreading and causing him big problems. Some abscesses will burst on their own but they are painful and the sooner you get it treated the better. Hope this helps Regards Carolyn "Tom" wrote in message news:Zdu1b.226069$o%2.103962@sccrnsc02... thanks for the reply, Carolyn. last night he finally showed up and i
took him to a vet, only to find out that treatment would cost about three times as much as i could possibly afford. it really shook me up wonderring what to do and what would happen to him. then, for some reason, God smiled on me and i saw late last night that the swelling was gone and this morning i found the puncture where it had ruptured. he's back to his normal self. and i have some AB medicine i can give him until the danger is past. what an awful weekend. solong, Louie Carolyn wrote: Hi Louie, Your cats abscess could have many causes.
