Sadie Dog does this and, always insists on checking the closet, like that
would be a place she could go, but she has to look anyway..

I think it is so funny when the cat is clamoring to go outside only to
flinch when it feels that cold air on its face and run away from the
open door.

Usually followed by trying to go out by another door to see if its warmer
out there.

My tough little Finnish-Estonian Russian Blue is out right now in -9C.
Doesn't show any sign of wanting to come inside, either.

Caliban is staying inside, though.

-5 degrees sounds very impressive until I realize it means 23 degrees
farenheit. When I lived in Boston I was out in that temperature all the
time. Granted, any indoor-outdoor cats I might have had probably didn't
spend much time outside in that weather.

Be nice to him - he's very ill right now!

It's fairly mild by my standards, and positively balmy by the standards
of my sister who lives in Winnipeg!

Nevertheless, poor Boyfriend obviously has higher standards as to
weather, since he actually chose a litter box over the Great Outdoors!

Sam, after a brief period of adjustment, now generally much prefers the
indoors too. However, he has once in a while managed to scoot out around
my legs to investigate interesting smells. Mostly, he doesn't even
bother to try, but I suppose every so often some outside animal has been
laying down interesting smells, or something. Normally, he doesn't go
very far, and is much easier to retrieve than Mandy (RB) was - Betsy
(RB), once she discovered IN, never cared to go OUT again, except for
very brief periods in the summer, when she was alone in the house with
me and Mandy-on-a-string in the back yard. And then, after about 30
seconds (it sometimes seemed) she wanted In again.

Sam has discovered that if there's something nasty, cold and wet falling
from the sky, he can duck under the front steps and sniff around there
in the relatively dry, if not in the warm. Of course, if I get fed up
with him and leave him there, he's soon meowing indignantly at the front
door to get back in. I have never encountered a cat who didn't think
that the door should be left wide open in any kind of weather until he
or she was quite ready to use it!

It must be that tough Finnish-Estonian blood! Perhaps those northern
cats naturally have high cold tolerance! But if that's the case, why
does Caliban like to stay indoors? G

To use the litterbox. He likes to use the out for his toilet duties but
it's really cold here. It was -5C last night so he was in all night. He
asked to go out this morning when it was still about -3.
He changed his mind when he saw how cold it was, returned and did the most
massive pee in KFC's clean litterbox. He must have been saving it all
night as it took him a whole minute to do it! and it definitely ruined the
litterbox as it spread and spread and spread.
Poor lad, it has be dire circumstances before he will consider using a
litterbox.
-5 is dire circumstances in anyone's book. Brrrr.

Poor Boyfie. Kiss kiss.

She reminds me of a tiny Icelandic friend of mine who would be amused at
how we New Yorkers responded to winter. She would shake her head, and say
"You're not a Wiking."

Robbie has informed me that he's not getting up until the weather gets
warmer! HRFL went out, came back in and registered his disgust at the
cold... then went back to bed!

I've spent quite a bit of time in both Boston and Winnipeg. At least 3
winters each. And I can corroborate Cheryl's sister's opinion. I think in
the 3 winters I spent in Wpg, the temp never rose above 0 F. from November
15 through about March 1. My 2nd winter there (1972-73) I shared a ride down
to Florida in December and flew back from Atlanta to Wpg. around the first
of January. It was 77 F. when I got on the plane in Atlanta, and on arrival
in Wpg. it was -70 F. with wind chill factored in. By the end of my 3rd
winter in Wpg. I was almost as accustomed to it as the natives, out and
about in 35-F. weather in shorts and t-shirt. Unlike the first winter when I
had to dress in so many layers to go outside that by the time I was done
dressing, the clothing was so thick and heavy that I could barely move!

As indoor kitties Dunzi and Sarsi love this time of year because the
heating is on! At the moment, Dunzi is asleep on top of the
scratching post (not that she ever scratches that much and I am always
amazed she doesn't fall off in her sleep!) by the living room radiator
and Sarsi is half under a duvet on the bed by the radiator they;re not
moving until tea time!

Time for a reference to Robert Heinlein's short story collection "The
Door into Summer" (The title of which, according to the author, was
prompted by a cat of his who insisted upon testing every door in the
house - seven, IIRC - in hopes of finding better weather lurking outside
one of them.)
