Default Protect Elephants from the Ivory Trade

https://community.hsus.org/campaign/..._source=gahib5

Countries that have signed the Convention on International Trade in
Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) are meeting right
now to determine how to protect dozens of animal species that are
traded internationally.

This includes decisions that will have a great impact on elephants,
who are being threatened by habitat destruction, conflict with humans,
and especially the illegal ivory trade. CITES banned the international
ivory trade in 1989 but has allowed one export of stockpiled ivory
from Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe to Japan, and just this week
approved another export of stockpiled ivory from Botswana, Namibia and
South Africa to Japan.

Although some African countries have proposed a 20-year moratorium on
any further international ivory trade, other countries want to expand
the ivory trade even further. Elephant populations are still
recovering from the devastation caused by the ivory trade before the
ban. Even with the ban in place, nations cannot protect elephants from
poaching for ivory. Allowing additional ivory sales only stimulates
markets in Japan and China and will make poaching even more rampant.

We have to protect elephants by establishing an ivory trade
moratorium.

ACT NOW!
CITES will end June 15, 2007. Don't wait until it's too late! Let the
U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service delegation to CITES know that U.S.
citizens want to protect elephants. Sign this petition to make your
voice heard!
