Gretchen Marie was my little sunshine. She brightened my life
immeasurably from the day I adopted her at the age of ten weeks until
she departed for the Rainbow Bridge at 15-1/2 years. This cat was one
in a million and so was our relationship. Her affection, intelligence
and sense of humor made every day precious. She made me a far better
human being than I would have been on my own. The most important
quality she taught me was that of being yourownself. So many humans
want to be someone they aren't: more important, better looking,
richer, younger, taller, etc. We seem to have difficulty accepting
that being our own best selves is enough. Gretchen Marie never wanted
to be bigger or have more beautiful fur or be a galloping horse or a
graceful dolphin or even a lion or tiger. She was always herself--a
cat. She celebrated that and bestowed our world with her perfect
cat-ness.

The container which now holds her ashes has the following saying on it:

Herewith are deposited the ashes
of one who possessed beauty without vanity,
strength without insolence,
courage without ferocity and
all the virtues of human beings without their vices.
This praise, which would be unmeaning flattery
if inscribed over human ashes,
is but a just tribute which makes one grateful
to now have the privilege
of the happy memories left behind
by this pet.

I am so very grateful for all that she was and continues to be in my
heart.

A wonderful tribute to a wonderful girl Arlene. I know just how heart
wrenching it is to write these tributes.

Gretchen Marie's spirit will always live on in "The Community". I feel
like I got to know her over the years thanks to your sharing her personality
with us all.

That is how I felt when I received Punkins ashes. They currently sit on a
bookshelf and I'm not sure if I'll bury them under an azalea she used to
look at, or have them buried with my ashes when the time comes. Punkins is
home.

Thanks. When I received her ashes, I felt she was home with me again
and it was quite comforting and I feel her little spirit around me and
my new roommate all the time.

Miss Violette, you were a good friend to GM. Us silly old hoomins just
love all the adventures you kitties shared. May they continue forever.

The list of Honorees is shockingly long this year. I can't believe how
many kitties' names I've seen over the years. But it's wonderful that
they live on not only in their hoomin's heart, but in all of ours.

Arlene, I know how you feel. I have Laura's ashes and a teaspoon of the
ashes of my daughter's cat Tomo and they are to be buried with me. My
very first cat, the lady cat Albert, is buried in the yard of the house
I now live in. Some day, when heart and muscles agree, I will exhume her
so she can join me in my grave. How could I have enternal rest without a
cat or two sleeping with me?

I have told my friends and family that GM's ashes are to be buried with
me and if they forget they have to dig me up and put her in there. I
have put some of her favorite things in the container: mousie, ball,
plastic twist tie and a rubber finger.

sobs-- that was truly beautiful, Arlene. Siggy's ashes are still on my
mantel too. I keep thinking we should sprinkle them over the ivy he liked
to romp in, but somehow haven't done it. It is amazing how some cats are
just soo great. Gwen used to sing "You are my sunshine" to him all the
time. At TED's office, on the way to the RB, she sang that in his ear. I
think he heard it.

Anyway, I am happy that you and Little Kitty have found each other.

Gretchen Marie ranks among the greatest of the great cats. It's hard for
me to believe we are having a Jellicle Ball without her on the earth
side. I'm sure she has things well in paw on the other side of Bridj.

What a lovely tribute and a beautiful inscription Arlene. Liddle Zoë
Underfoot's ashes sit on a shelf in my china cabinet, along with a stuffed
angel kitty, an angel sitting on a wrought iron bench, and a little box with
a few of her whiskers and claw sheaths.

Vinnie is not yet home. I'm waiting for the angel kitty urn. TED is
keeping him till I receive it.
