Quite a learning experience
In case anyone in this group hadn't heard, I've left Iowa and moved to
Illinois. The company I was working for has been acquired by a larger outfit in Arkansas, and my job was slated to be cancelled. So, I've moved to the Chicago area and gone to work for a company I had contracted with before. Nancy has remained in Iowa, working on getting our house sold or rented. It's a bit of a bummer for us to be apart, but we're hoping it won't last too long. I was also getting really bummed at being away from the kitties. I moved out here Memorial Day weekend, and by last weekend I was getting pretty frazzled from kitty deprivation. So, this weekend when I returned to Iowa to help out with the house preparation, I decided to bring the kitties back with me. Oy. Harri and Ranger don't mind travelling. Amelia and Sammy both dislike it A LOT. Lots of yowling and howling for the entire 5 hour drive. We eventually got there and got everyone and everything unloaded. Locked the kitties in the downstairs bedroom with litter boxes, food and water, then an hour or so later I closed off the upstairs bedrooms and let the kitties out to explore. Harri and Ranger were the first out of the bedroom, followed by Amelia. Sammy hid in the closet until after midnight, but then he ventured out to explore as well. That first night I got visits on my futon bed from all four of the furkids. They spend all day yesterday exploring. Last night things were different. I had forgotten just how noisy cats can be! I would hear the thunder of a herd of wild animals approaching, just to see Ranger run down the stairs. The night would be shattered by a huge CRASH, and when I would go to look for what had been destroyed, nothing would appear out of place. Sammy found a new game - he sits in the kitchen in front of a cabinet, grabs the door and pulls it open a few inches, then lets go so that it slams shut. BAM... BAM... BAM... BAM... Harri, Ranger, and Sammy all spent periods last night walking through the house meowing. Repeatedly. And loudly. When I would call to them they would hop on the futon to snuggle, then would jump down and start meowing and wandering again. It will be interesting to see if they let me sleep through the night tonight. |

The girls like to play 'bang the bathroom cabinet' so I put a scrunchy around the handles to spoil their fun. A band of elastic would work too. If they can't pry the cupboard door open they can't slam it. |

My Cav does the cupboard door banging thing, but only on the cupboard that contains the cat food and wild bird food. Jeanette |

One, you won't suffer from Kitty Deprivation Syndrome, and two, the house can now be packed up and things moved from it without having to worry if the cats have gotten into something they shouldn't, or got out the door in the confusion of the move, etc. The Royal Critters are already acclimating to their new domain, and when the familiar things from the old house arrive, they won't be freaked out. Good luck with settling matters of the old house quickly, be it via sale or rental. Oy. Harri and Ranger don't mind travelling. Amelia and Sammy both dislike it A LOT. I would recommend those "As Seen On TV" alarms that go off when the two magnetic parts separate... except he's just as likely as not to start playing with the cabinet door in the wee hours of the morning. I can envision the cat pulling the door open, the alarm going off, the cat running away in fright, and the cabinet door remaining open while the alarm beeps merrily until you get up and shut the cabinet. Not conducive to good sleep. Instead, maybe some cloth or paper towel can be put in place to deaden the closing of the door, so it won't bang shut when it closes. Harri, Ranger, and Sammy all spent periods last night walking through the house meowing. Repeatedly. And loudly. When I would call to them they would hop on the futon to snuggle, then would jump down and start meowing and wandering again. What smart kitties! They're playing "Marco Polo"! ;-) It will be interesting to see if they let me sleep through the night tonight. Here's hoping they've explored lots and tired themselves out, so you can get some sleep. Donna, Captain, Stanley, and Mini |
