Default Pre-Medicating??

Sammy will be due for her Snippety Surgery in a few months and I have
a question for the group.

I've heard that it helps cats cope with the pain if they are give pain
medication starting a day or two before the surgery. Do any of you
have any information about this?

Hugs,

Have not heard of this. I would not consider it myself. They usually don't
epxperience a lot of pain. Sugar did seem to be extra uncomfortable, so I
went back and got half a pain pill. It got her through the worse few hours,
then she was fine. However, most people do not seem to notice enough pain
behaviour to consider it worth while. I may have even been a bit over
worried.

Really!??! I remeber when I had my hysterectomy - I was in very
severe pain for several weeks. I can't imagine her not having very
much pain after having her tummy opened up then stitched up again. I
had just read somewhere that if you start the pain medication a day or
two beforehand their pain will be much lessened after surgery. I
REALLY don't want my little sweetie to be hurting and not be able to
tell me that she's hurting, that gives me horrors (cats are so careful
to hide it when they are in pain).

Well, she is young and a lot quicker healing than probably you would have
been. Also, yeah, they do hide pain well. That's why I did go get a pain
pill for Sugar. She looked much more miserable than people usually describe
(or than I rememebered from childhood cats). You could ask for a dose to
take home just in case. Anyhow, it is something to bring up with your vet
when you get a chance. How old is Sammy going to be when she gets her
surgery? I let Sugar go a little too long. She did not appear to go into
heat until about 6 months and probably if I had taken her in at 4 it would
not have been as bad.

I have to agree. Although sometimes people say their cats don't seem to be in
much discomfort after a spay, I could tell that all three of our cats were in
pain. I did not receive any pain medication for the youngest one--she was 5 and
a half months old at the time--other than what the vet gave her at the time.
Because she was the youngest, she nevertheless had a quicker recovery time than
our older one who was spayed at 9 months. More recently we took in a stray who
was estimated to be about two years old (although I think she was younger than
that) but it was definitely hardest on her because she was spayed as an adult
(or near adult). She received pain medication for about three days after her
spay.
I
had just read somewhere that if you start the pain medication a day or
two beforehand their pain will be much lessened after surgery. I

I have a suspicion that the vet would not want to do the surgery if the cat had
been receiving pain medication for several days prior because it might depress
her system and possibly make anesthesia more dangerous. This is something you
should discuss with your vet and find out what his/her protocol for pain relief
is. You will probably receive pain medication to give after the spay surgery as
needed, but I doubt the vet will want to give anything like that prior to
anesthesia.
