Default Puppy Bowl V

NOT off topic...

For those who get Animal Planet on TV, today is "Puppy Bowl V" (that's
the roman numeral 5) - they're showing it every 2 hours.

For the unaware, in celebration of the Super Bowl (which is today),
the last few years Animal Planet has been getting puppies from
shelters, putting them on a toy covered stage made to look like a
miniature American football field (complete with goal posts), and
letting them romp while music plays in the background.

Some of the pups look like they've having a great time, romping with
the other pups or playing with the toys. Others look frightened or
overwhelmed by the whole thing. Of course, there's "play by play" too
- I think it's the same guy who narrates things for NFL films. (I
like the camera that shoots up through the clear bottom of the water
bowl - sometimes the pups drink, more often they walk in it)

The reason this is not off topic is the "kitten halftime show". Same
field, similar music, no play-by-play. They put this huge carpet
covered climbing mountain in the middle of the field. There are lots
of toys too, both moving (such as feathers on a string attached to an
arm that's always moving) and not.

The kittens are usually stock still, just looking around at first,
until a few get into it. Some never move, some go to sleep, some go
wild with the toys (but, unlike the pups, the kittens don't often seem
to interact much with each other). As befits a halftime show, at the
end the field is usually nearly buried in confetti - which nearly
buries some of the kittens too!

The beagles often take MVP. I think it's a good way to see temperament in
puppies before you adopt. I've watched this every year since they
started it. What a great idea!

I love that they added so many "Panic Mouse" toys this year. Kittens love
them!

I always think the kitty half-time show is a bit misconceived. Too many
blinky, flashing lights, shiny things-- the kittens get confused and
overstimulated. Thin out a few of those distractions, and they'd probably
have a better show. I did enjoy seeing one little gray imp nom-nom-nomming
on another kitty's ears.

My felines loved it. Even the puppy part.

They set and watched it almost non-stop. The one had his front paws
right up on the TV stand to get a closer look. I recorded it for use
later.

I even enjoyed the puppies. Even Schroeder, the one the was always
lounging or sleeping. I think he even got a penalty for delay of game
or something. :-)
