Cat time
I get up early every morning for one reason: cats! First I feed Emily, our
cheeky little grey kitty. She gets Hills GD Prescription Diet for elderly cats. Then I go downstairs and give chubby little black Sophie her food. She gets Hill's RD Prescription Diet for overweight kitties. And finally Mooch, our semi-feral tuxedo cat who lives on our veranda, gets his breakfast of Hills Science Diet. All three are dry foods, but I also give each cat a dollop of wet "gooshy" food. Then, finally, I have my own breakfast! By the way if you're a member of Facebook, you might like to visit, and perhaps join, Mooch's Fan Club. Here's a link to it. https://www.facebook.com/groups/moochfanclub/ - Jill, there's another rec.pets.cats. anecdotes post by me! |

Mine generally mob the feeding location, which is on a board covering the bathtub that nobody uses. Once I put the food down, in three bowls, they'll come over and decide if they want to eat. Nipsy will nibble. Scooter will sniff and look at me as if to ask "what is this crap?". Marlo might decide to show up but is more likely to come by later. I'm pretty much feeding various Fancy Feast varieties these days, and leaving some of the Kirkland dry food out for when they snack later. I don't know how I could ever get them eating separate foods. |

She gets Hill's Prescription KD (kidney diet) dry food. Fortunately she loves it. I tried but she will not *touch* the gooshy version. I also give her about 1 tsp. of Fancy Feast in the morning just to rev up her appetite. If she deems I've overslept, Persia will gently touch my nose to wake me up. It never fails to make me laugh. Beats the heck out of an alarm clock! It wasn't so cute when she was doing it at 6AM. But, it's like having a cat with a snooze alarm. If I say, "It's not time yet" she'll let me sleep another 10-15 minutes, then gently tap my nose again. She touches my nose when I'm on the couch reading a book, too. She stretches out next to me. Out of the corner of my eye I'll see this little paw reaching up... If I acknowledge her ("what are you doing with that paw?") she pulls it back and looks *so* innocent. Who, me? I wasn't doing anything! A minute later, here comes the paw again. She just has to touch my nose. I have no idea why she likes touching my nose. Then again, she probably doesn't know why I like touching her nose. Jill |

I can't imagine having more than one with different food requirements. How does one keep them from eating each others food? Hmmmm. Let's pretend I have more than one cat. The layout of my house isn't really conducive to separate feeding stations. Persia's food and water bowls are in my bedroom. There is no floor space in the kitchen for them. There's no basement, no upstairs/downstairs for separate feeding stations. I suppose I could put a food bowl in the guest bathroom. But I can't think how I'd manage to keep the other cat from eating it, too. Jill |

All I can think is the wet KD must taste like "medicine". (I wouldn't know, I never actually tasted it.) Jill |

Cats are all very different. Most of mine have not liked gooshy food. Lindy (RB) loved it, and had to have a little bit every day. Because Lindy got it, Skeeter (RB) had to have some too, even though she didn't like it. She would force herself to eat it so Lindy couldn't get it. You could tell from her rigid posture that she hated every bite. The two I have now had never had it, but I still had Lindy when I got them, so Waffles decided he had to have some too. Pickles doesn't like it. Waffles will start pestering me about an hour before the time I usually give it to him, to make sure I don't forget. -- Joy Unlimited Colorful Crocheted Critters Photos at http://www.PictureTrail.com/joy9 |

The one cat I had who adored wet food, Mandy (RB), always gobbled it up so fast she upset her stomach, threw it up, and sometimes (but not always) ate it again. I had her checked out in case she had some health problem, but no, she just ate faster than her stomach could manage. I generally fed her dry food that didn't provoke the gobbling and vomiting. -- Cheryl |

Yes, here it is: http://www.smarthome.com/53700/Gatef...or-Cats/p.aspx My cats are already wearing collars with an RF tag on them that is part of the Loc8tor tracking system. These guys should get together so I can have one RF tag that can be used for tracking or feeding! I have the Loc8tor since I let them out in the backyard, which is theoretically fenced in, but since it's possible that they could escape, it's just insurance that I can hopefully find them. |

Yes, here it is: http://www.smarthome.com/53700/Gatef...or-Cats/p.aspx Interesting technology, but I haven't found cats tend to be very much into techo-stuff. My cats are already wearing collars with an RF tag on them that is part of the Loc8tor tracking system. These guys should get together so I can have one RF tag that can be used for tracking or feeding! I have the Loc8tor since I let them out in the backyard, which is theoretically fenced in, but since it's possible that they could escape, it's just insurance that I can hopefully find them. Persia wears a collar with a tag inscribed with her name and my phone number. She's micro-chipped. Someone front declawed her so she doesn't go outside. I wouldn't let a cat outside around here anyway. A couple of years ago there was an alligator in my back yard. I've seen videos of a cat challenging alligators... not a great idea. The people taking the video thought it was cute. Yeah, one snap and the cat is gone. There are also large birds of prey (owls and hawks) which can easily injure cats. Also raccoons, which aren't the friendliest of critters. Jill |
