Anybody out there know of any good websites that explain makeup with
tips etc.? I tried Googling, but found very little for some reason.
I'm looking for something that both has good step-by-step instructions
and good photos as well.

Here are some sites that seem to have better information than the others I
found.

http://www.wildaboutmakeup.com/

http://styles101.homestead.com/application.html This one has some good
pictures of eye shadows.

http://www.womenfitness.net/beauty/makeup/

Not quite as nice a site.

I'm one of those women who just never "got" makeup. Once a good long
while, I might put on a bit of lipstick, a little rouge and some eye
shadow. But I basically preferred to go nekkid most of the time, and
so have no clue about makeup and its wonders.

Now that I'm 50, I'm thinking "Hmmm, maybe I should try a little of
this stuff." But, as I said, I am clueless.

Watch your local department stores to see when one might have a make-up
specialist doing "make-overs" - or make an appointment with one of the
salesgirls if there won't be a specialist there for a while. They can
show you how to apply make-up best suited to your face and features. But
*DON'T* get talked into buying any of the high priced items - there have
been many studies done that found that high priced department store
make-up is no better than the drug store variety, but they cost about 10
times as much.

I believe you (and the studies) but Clinique is the only moisturizer that
doesn't make me break out. I love their soap too.

But I only buy those when they have the semi-annual give away sales. My
daughter always lets me know when she sees the sale in the paper.

Default Oh, but... Online Makeovers (WAS: [OT] Makeup)

Sadly, my Christian Dior lipstick is now mashed into the carpet and smeared
in 2 year old handprints up the hall wall. Lucky He's so cute and I love him
so much because I nearly wrung his neck that day.

You know, I never know what they mean by things like 'almond-shaped
eyes' and 'heart-shaped faces'.

When I was a teenager my mum didn't really wear makeup and didn't teach me
so I was never into it. Once I started working and had some money to play
with it I started loving it. I wear makeup every day now and the best word
there is play - while there are styles of clothes I would never wear with
makeup I have endless choice!

A couple of suggestions - if you aren't used to wearing it and might feel
uncomfortable go for something very neutral. If you feel like your face is
dirty wearing foundation try a tinted moisturiser. I have one from clinique
that is gorgeous - its not cheap but not too expensive (about $40 AUD). It
gives me coverage but doesn't feel as heavy as foundation. I've had
compliments when I've worn it!

Definitaly try one of the counters at a department store. The ones I've been
too have never been too much in sales mode - I guess it can depend on the
salesperson. Look for someone who is wearing makeup with the kind of look
you would like and ask her what she is wearing. A friend that I studied with
at uni worked part time at the Revlon counter in the department store in the
city and her boss would often tell her she wasn't wearing enough makeup. But
lots of customers would ask her what she used because she had a very natural
look. Plus she's gorgeous and doesn't need much anyway! She models part time
now.

Honetly, your best bet is to go to a makeup consultant and have a
lesson. M.A.C. is awesome, but spendy.
http://www.maccosmetics.com/home.tmpl?ngextredir=1 They perfectly
match your skin tone. I used to like Clinique but haven't used their
products for years. Mary Kay cleansers are the best (their Timewise
line).

I was make-up queen in my 20's. Once I hit 35 I quit wearing any
except on special occasions.

I know it's been said before, but try out various of the make-up
counters in department stores, and get a makeover - many of them are
free, and staff *should* be only too happy to offer advice about
textures, colour combinations, etc. Technology has produced all sort of
new stuff such as light foundations which give good coverage without you
looking like you've been immersed in a vat of paint. The tip I saw
about not buying anything until you've had a chance to wear it "in case
of allergic reaction" is a good one!

Keep an eye open for freebie/special offers as well. Over here, several
of the leading brands do packages where, if you spend £x, you get a
package of bits free. So, by getting my foundation and maybe an
eyeshadow and paying for them, I got a bag containing lipstick, mascara
and some little samples of skin products as well.

Do get a decent foundation - it's the base for everything.

Ask questions! - ingredients, make-up tools needed, what you should do
for your skin type. Do you wear glasses, and will their magnification
have any affect on the overall look? Contact lenses?

If you want a simple look that doesn't take hours to put on, tell them!
