Is Advantage safe?
My vet really pushes Advantage as the best flea remedy for my cat, but I
worry about all of those chemicals - both for her health and my own. Is Advantage really ok to use? Are there other alternatives for getting rid of fleas? |

Are there other alternatives for getting rid of fleas? Advantage works pretty well. Before it became available I used to bathe the cat about once a month, which only temporarily reduced the flea population. |

Now there's another topical product called Evolution that guards against fleas and ticks and worms. My cats are on that now. |

Are there other alternatives for getting rid of fleas? My cats are indoor cats and don't normally get fleas, but once, at a time when I was living in an apartment in which I shared a hallway with a downstairs neighbor who had dogs and used to let them in the hallway to let them out, the dogs got fleas--and I got fleas from passing through the same hall as the dogs. As a result, I unwittingly brought them upstairs to my cats and infested them, too. Argh! Never underestimate the power of humans to help transmit fleas! My downstairs neighbor took her dogs to the vet and got them put on Advantage. I took my cats to the vet (only one of them, actually) and we got Frontline. My neighbor never had flea problems with the dogs again, and after the one course of treatment, I never had to treat my cats again at all. The good thing about it was that I was able to "flea-bomb" my bedroom, as it were, without all the hassle of a real flea bomb, by simply allowing my cats into it for a few days after I'd treated them. At the time, I hadn't been letting them in there, and you know how cats are just dying to spend time in a formerly forbidden place in the home, so when I changed the rules and let them in, they spent tons of hours in there just lying around during the day while I stayed outside. The end result was that the fleas in my bedroom, seeing a fresh source of blood other than me, jumped onto the cats immediately and died--not to mention that it broke the cycle of the eggs, etc. I needed this to happen badly, as I was getting eaten alive myself at night by fleas! I needed to get the fleas transferred to a creature whose skin would kill them, not allow them to feast at will--and allowing the cats in the bedroom worked like a charm. (I sometimes joke that I was tempted to put the Frontline on myself, too!) Other methods may be even less intrusive if you have concerns about the chemicals--but I had no problem with using Frontline on my cats, and my neighbor had no problem with Advantage on her dogs. -- Trudi "Closed Due to Blackout.
