Why do kittens want to jump up to the highest places in a room..Mine

Not just kittens - it's a common trait of ALL cats
(w-e-l-l-l NEARLY all). However, older cats aren't quite so
prone to disturbing whatever is ON the shelf - unless they
intend to. (I once had a cat who would regulary threaten
the cat-collection I kept on an open shelf, whenever he
decided I'd been on the phone too long!)

Wa---haaaaaaa! Little Mimi was the Mistress of Gravity. Knocking
something over or sending something flying was her all-purpose
response to frustration, lack of attention, me in bed too long, or
just boredom. When it didn't work, she escalated. She sent the small
things over by pushing them with a paw, natch. But the big things--
e.g. a telephone-- she sent over by getting behind them, and butting
with her head. She always watched them go, too, with great
satisfaction.
The funniest thing that she always sent flying was the Baby
Jesus-in-his-manger figure in our Christmas creche. Always him, too.
He was just a perfect size, weight and dimension. so he was
always taking unscheduled flights off the piano, though the air, and
onto the living room floor, to be batted to parts unknown.
