Last night, there were several heavy thunderstorms, and heavy (much needed
rain). It hasn't broken the horrid humidity yet, but at least the
temperature to go with the horrible humidity has lessened. It has made
getting a good night's sleep difficult what withthe thunder and Fluffy
barking her damn fool head off every time she hears it.

Anyway, this mornign as I was getting as I was getting in the car, I was
scared half to death by a cold wet thing touching my arm. I looked around in
shock, and there was a big red nose, ginormous pink tongue, and two sad
brown eyes looking at me pleadingly.

I was staring at a very cold, wet and hungry big red Malumute. I hadn't seen
him in the driveway when I was getting into the car, and was ever so
grateful that I had chosen not to close the door while I futzed around with
my bag. Had I closed the door, I may not have seen him, and may have easily
reversed over the poor guy.

He seemed friendly, but very cold and wet. I didn't want ot reverse the with
him around, so I got back out of the car to call Joel to remove the dog. As
I got out, SD took a step back and howled the very saddest, lonliest,
lostest doggy howl I have ever heard. Poor SD, I tried to reassure him.

Joel of course had developed male deafness this morning, so I had to open
the front door and goget him. But as I opened the front door, SD just
walked into the house just as casual as you please. He took one look at
Joel, who was still onthe lounge, licked his hand, and sat on his feet.
While Joel was still inthe middle of saying "What the ...?" SD, in an act
worth of Shmogg's best b*st*rd c*ttery, rolled over and allowed Joel to rub
his rather soggy but none the less incredibly beautiful tummy.

Cary came running up and I pretty much had to crash tackle the poor little
guy, as I didn't know whether SD was OK with enthusiastic kids or not. But
SD sat back up, and cleaned Cary's face with one giant doggy lick. Cary
giggled and patted SD happily.

We dried SD down, and gave her a bowl of dog chow, which was devoured with
much enthusiasm.

The argument went like this:

"well, looks like we have another dog"

"no"

"Well, he just walked in like he was home, its fate"

"Someone must own him, he's worth a small fortune"

"Well,Ok, but what if he doesn't have an owner"

"We already have a dog"

"Fluffy could do with a friend"

"He needs heaps of grooming" (and demonstrated the reality of this by
plucking handful sof fur out)

"Thats OK, I can brush him"

"And will need far more walking than Fluff. Malumutes were bred for pulling
sleds, you'll have to take him for a *run* every day"

"But look how good SD & Cary get along!"

"SD? You've already named him?"

"SD, Spare Dog."

male shaking head in utter disbelief

"Well its a start, we can name him later"

"We. Are. Not. Keeping. Him!"

"Not even if no-one claims him?"

"We don't need another dog"

"But he's soooo cute"

By now, SD is *snoring* on Joel's feet

"Well, he is a wonderful looking dog", Joel conceded

"So we are keeping him?"

"No."

So I made the necessary calls and the Ranger picked up SD this afternoon.

Please purr (or wag) that SD and his real family are reunited. He was
clearly a well-looked after, fed, groomed and well trained family-friendly
doggy who had probably gotten scared inthe storm and lost after the rain
washed away the scents dogs use to navigate. And worth at least $500. A very
beautiful, strong but gentle and dignified creature, who I would have loved
othave kept as my own. But that would have deprived his real family of his
friendship and loyalty.

I had something like that happen to me once. I hope he is reunited
with his people. Any way you'd know if he was?

It was during a rainstorm in 1950 that Rex followed me home (unknown to
me) and walked into our house and made it his home for the next 15 years.
We dried the soaking dog off and fed him and gave him a warm place to
sleep. The next day we took him to the Vet as his eyes were infected and
he was obviously not well. I reported the lost dog to animal control and
I said that we would like to keep him if he were not claimed. I checked
all three newspapers back for 3 months, but did not find a lost dog item.
Two weeks later an animal control officer came to my office and said he
came to sell me a dog license. He was a beautiful red cocker mix about
four or five years old. As a side note: My 8 year old son had been
praying nightly that he could get a dog. His prayer was answered. MLB

My first dog (since childhood, when there'd only been one, and only for a
few days) arrived in a similar manner. The ex and I were living in an
isolated and primitive village where people often took their unwanted
animals to the dump and dropped them off. Our next door neighbor returned
from the dump one day with a small black puppy that was maybe 7 weeks old.
She had been planning to get another dog since their family dog had died not
long before. When she showed me the puppy, at some point in I said "What a
pretty girl!" and the lady said "Girl!?!? I wanted a boy! I am taking her
back to the dump!" to which I said, "No, you're not!!" The ex had been
wanting a dog, I hadn't, but after a while I grew to love that dog
intensely - especially when I rescued a tiny kitten from a trash can in
front of a Safeway (where someone had been giving away "free kittens" and
didn't want to take the last one back home) and the dog let her suckle to
her little heart's content.

A MALEMUTE!!! WOW!!!

Purrs he gets home.
Mallies are one of my favorite dogs. They are outrageously sweet
(although they're huge, energetic, stubborn, and shed tons). Did he
talk to you? That's one of my great favorite things about Mallies.
They don't bark, they talk to you. They go "Wooo woooo! Woooooo!" in
cadences that sound incredibly like speech.

It's a shame you couldn't keep him while they looked for his owners...
but then your hearts would be broken when he had to leave - a dog that
gorgeous, friendly (and expensive) has to have come from a good home,
and got out somehow...

My aunt found her beautiful little jack russell wandering the
streets... the animal shelter didn't have any missing reports, and
nobody ever claimed her so they kept her and called her Molly.
