Default Avoiding an accident

I had tile laid today in the part of the bathroom that has the commode and
tub. It was carpeted, and I have always planned to have that replaced. I
don't like having carpeting around a toilet--I don't think it is sanitary.
So, the workers removed the door so they could easily fit the tile together
with the carpet leading into the bedroom, and they will return tomorrow to
put the toilet back in place. I happened to glance in a little while ago
and was horrified to see that I had not thought about the open pipe (where
the toilet will be seated) through the wax seal. I suddenly had horrifying
visions of Holly or Duffy falling through that hole (especially Duffy
because he is used to wandering around the bathroom and could not see the
hole). I know that it is highly unlikely that one of them would step in
just the right way to tumble head-first, but that was my fear. So, I locked
them out of the bedroom. Holly was already following behind me, as usual,
and Duffy was just walking into the room. They don't like to be locked out
at night, so I will sleep in the guest room tonight, and they can join me
there. That's the room that was "Duffy's room" when I adopted him.

Whew!!!

I'm glad you spotted the hazard in plenty of time to take steps to
prevent an accident. Nice catch.

Sometimes WE need nine lives as much as our pets do. Like when we have
the shock of realizing that there's something dangerous in the house
that needs to be attended to, and our blood pressure spikes
accordingly. ;-)

I'm glad you fixed it before Holly or Duffy fell in!

I remember 'kitten proofing' the house, especially the basement, when I
got Blizzard (RB) so many years ago.

I used a lot of chicken wire mesh to close up numerous openings in to
the walls, etc.

Goodness, THAT would have been a nightmare. We have to be like
mothers-of-toddlers, don't we? Constantly staying a step ahead and
kitty-proofing.

It is really easy to sit something heavy over that open pipe for the
time while the toilet is off. The guys who removed the toilet should
have done so. Say something to them and it might avoid problems for
someone else in the future.

I didn't see it until after they left. I could have located something to
put over it once I saw the problem, but it was easier just to change rooms
for the night and sleep in the guest room. You're right, thought. It would
have been a good idea to mention it to them when they returned this morning
to put the toilet back in place.

Good move. The old saying "curiosity killed the cat" can be so true.
They really like to investigate holes. I remember a story a furnace man
told me about a cat that got into an open air vent and ended up in the
furnace -- gives mew the creeps to think about it. MLB

It probably would have been a good idea to cover it anyway to prevent
sewer gas from coming in. MLB

The interesting thing about that is that there was absolutely no odor. I
checked for that once I saw the problem.
