Sub-q Disaster

rec.pets.cats.health+behav (news:1107303382.e330bd18b16b8ad43aa1d4fb956ae17b@ teranews): I'm glad she didn't NEED it, need it, today. I think I got about 40cc into her before she bolted leaving me and a spraying IV line behind. Yes, I solo-ed at home alone giving Kami sub-q. I warmed the bag a little so it wouldn't be chilly. She's never liked the scruff of her neck grabbed, so she seriously tensed when I did it and I stuck the needle in crooked. I turned the wheel and it flowed, and it wasn't coming out the other side, so I guess that was okay. She just was "filling up" oddly. She sat in my lap for a minute, tried to leave a couple of times, but I coo-ed her into staying. Then she suddenly dashed. Next time may or may not be better... Good luck next time. Even trying to give my Shadow a subQ injection of a medication, he'd rear up and claw my face before the needle even stuck him, so I can't imagine having to to fluids. I hope I never have to, but reading experiences helps. I hope someone chimes in with experiences. Bless her little heart. -- Cheryl |

Then she suddenly dashed. Next time may or may not be better... I did my cat in the bathroom, with the door closed. That way if she bolted, she wouldn't go far. Fortunately, I never did have a bolting problem with her. I put a pillow in my lap and had her brush. She loves to brush her face and she was very distratced for the duration. I've also used this ploy, but while at the vet's. Since it wasn't a "need" issue, I didn't make her do the whole thing, but I think by the time she really requires the sub-q, we can do without a hitch. Never fear! If I can, I think anyone can. This is what I told others when I learned to give sub-Q's to my CRF cat, too. Hey, if I could do it, anyone can. ;-) Cathy |
