Big bonfire night tonight around here!

Most cities/communities arrange bonfires for all and there will be choir
singing and sometimes other entertainment.
it's "party time " for teenagers/student, especially in university

cities
Uppsala and Lund they party all day with lots of happenings, parades and
partying and partying all day.
Lots of companies close halfday or at least a few hours early today.

And even if it's celebrating spring I remember many chilly Walpurgis

nights,
even with snow falling ... well it is Sweden ... Today it's warm and

sunny
though.

Is May 1st "Labor Day" in Sweden, as it seems to be in much of Europe?
Or is that only the former communist countries? We were in Budapest for
May Day, one year, and it was certainly a public holiday there, but of
course Hungary was under communist rule for quite awhile.

It is "Labour Day" here in Thailand too. Major crazy traffic jams with
partiers everywhere. It is also the last weekend before school starts back
up after the summer holiday for Thai kids.

Yep, holiday it is - but not all go out marching here, it's good to have a
day off to work in the garden, preparing boats for the season or just being
lazy ...
Traditionally the social democrats - in government, did you notice in the US
that our primen minister Göran Persson met with Bush last week btw? or
didn't that make the news over there at all? - and other labour/leftish
parties all march and hold meetings and things.

Some conservative/right wing groups also do it now and this year Sweden's
biggest conservative party held a May 1 meeting for the first time to mark
the occasion of the expansion of the European Union with the 10 new member
states and another 75 million people - making a total of 25 countries and
453 million or so in the EU now.

| I enjoyed reading the links you posted. The third was funny! This is one
of
| the things I love about the net. Learning about culture that I would never
| learn anywhere else except maybe a newspaper, or TV news story but here
you
| get to really feel it.

I agree, you learn about places and things and feel connected to news and
happenings around the world in a way you just wouldn't otherwise. I'll read
or hear about something and think that "there's where so and so live",
"that's what was mentioned on rpca" and so on.
