Candance and Her Cat Bite
I just sent a detailed post about Candance's cat bite but it seems to
have gotten lost in cyberspace. So!! Candace, I wouldn't worry about the rabies. You should be on Augmentin 875mg twice daily for 10 days --- if you are not allergic to penicillin. Also, it is good that you were given a tetanus shot. I am a Physician Assistant and I've seen many infected cat bites. Cat bites become infected about 80% of the time so I would strongly encourage you to take the anitbiotics that the doctor prescribed you. Take Augmentin with food. Hope this helps!! Wendy |

That regime doesn't work for Fleagor's toxic bites: for me, it takes half as much Augmentin twice as often. The drug has a half life of about 60 minutes, so twelve hours after taking a dose, the blood level is almost nonexistent - it may be that it's too low to penetrate deeply enough into the large swelling I get. That regime has worked for bites from other cats though, just not for Fleagor's - he is very large and strong, and has very long and very sharp fangs that penetrate deeply. One thing I discovered about his bites is that I need to get started on the antibiotic within 24 hours, preferably a lot less - the last time he bit me, he bit my left hand on a Saturday and I didn't get to the doctor until Monday: by then the hand was swollen and too stiff to use, and it stayed that way for over a week. I don't worry about rabies from bites from my cats, even thoug I am completely paranoid about it from dogs (having been through the treatment fifty years ago when it was fourteen days of shots given with dull needles). Fortunately, Fleagor hasn't bitten me in the last three-four years, and the last time any cat bit me, I was already on Augmentin for a sinus infection and the bite didn't get infected. -- T.E.D. ) MST (Missouri University of Science and Technology) used to be UMR (University of Missouri - Rolla). .. |

I was bitten by an angry neighbor cat once, on the forearm. All four fangs sank right down to the bone and I still have the scars.... It was the most painful thing I've ever experienced but it never did get infected. I washed the wound out with peroxide followed by colloidal silver, and took grapefruit seed extract internally for a week or so. |

My cats never bite me, why would they want to? KFC does pretend to bite when she is medicated against her will but it really is a pretend bite. she just puts her teeth against my skin and says "carry on with with this and you'll regret it." I once ignored her warning and got severely bitten through the thumb. Served me right. Boyfriend does not have a bite or scratch in him. He has no idea how to. If I have to pick him up and I try not because it makes him afraid he almost faints with fright. Even after 5 years when he likes to knead me when everything is quiet, picking him up is not an option. It scares him. I don't know why, He's never known a cross word here. He's beloved and I wish he knew that no-one will will hurt him here. Something might be in the back of his mind from his past, He's very sensitive. Unlike KFC. She has certainly had a much more difficult early life than Boyfie had for longer but she is far more cheerful than he is. Tweed I get the little pretend bites that say "I've had enough" from all the cats. Bosley, who is very aggressive anyway, bites and means business if you try to medicate him. The worst cat bite I ever saw was when daughter accidentally shut Cherokee's tail in the door. He sunk his teeth into the calf of her leg as hard as he could. She still has a scar that looks like a snake bite.
