Questionz
I think you've captured it perfectly. It's exactly the way I think of this
community, but I could never say it so eloquently. Thank you for this lovely post. Ellie "Sylvia M" wrote in message ... Ofcourse the group has *evolved* over the years, possibly as some of the membership has *changed*, but the understructure ...that seems to have been there, helping the community to have *understructure* for lack of a better word has been what helps keep the community together. Those who come back for the Ball, for Kissamouse, for checking, in the ways I have been taking for granted, they are like the angels who watch over us. I'm getting gushy..sigh Where I seem to be going with this is that we learn from history, from each other, that everyone is important to the community in different ways, and that it's important that some things, the foundation, the walls, the roof of a building stay the same as much as possible, while the occupants, paint, carpets, accessories change. The building thus evolves. We should expect things to evolve, but change for the sake of change doesn't make sense to me, it's like throwing the baby out with the bathwater. IMO, Sylvia "Me" wrote in message ... Cory, It's very interesting to see the statistics for "my" group (this is the only one I regularly read on Usenet now, there used to be many). I think part of the impetus for change has been the web - there are so many more "community" options available now, back in the late 90s Usenet and a few other mailing lists were the only options. Now there are forums everywhere, they are easy to set up and easy to maintain. But this group is special to many of us. My original kitties (Binkley, Opus and Frieda) are all now at the Bridge, they were the original posters in the late 90s for me. When they were sick, or went to the Bridge, this was just about the only place that I could go for some support and understanding. Nobody understands how much you miss your kitty, except another lover of cats. This group will continue to change, and like everything else, we'll remember the good 'ol days. But meanwhile, I shall certainly continue to enjoy the adventures, balls, and relationships in rpcc. Julie Cory wrote: The split happened in very, very early 1997, so I'm guessing that the Great War took place during the last quarter of '96. http://groups.google.com/group/rec.p...ty/about?hl=en is a link to an "overview" of RPCC, complete with a tally of posts for each month from 2/97 to now. There were a LOT of posts until 2001, when suddenly the number started taking a HUGE nosedive, as you'll notice. The only time since then that we have numbers like we used to have is around the time of the Jellicle Ball in late October of every year. --- Unca Cory |

Well said, Ellie.
Ann In article , elliet1027 @earthlink.net says... Amen to this Kathy. New kitties have always been welcomed here, and that much (AFAIK) has never changed in rpcc. And traditions can be carried on, even if they change somewhat. The regular group that is here day after day will be the ones to decide about new traditions and new events, but I'm glad to hear that so many care about the Jellicle Ball. I guess a little nostalgia comes over us at Jellicle Ball time. We begin to think about the fun we had in the past and our loved ones at the RB. I wish everyone here could read a few of the stories (and real life events) from the past. There is a long oral tradition that filters down from the past and keeps the heritage of this group alive, so its roots are never allowed to whither away. I gained my knowledge of the split and the original group in the same way some of you are hearing it now, because I was not here during those times. Some of the original posters were already gone (some had died, others had lost contact) when I arrived, but I heard the names and the stories of all of them. I wish there could be a grandmother kittie or grandfather kittie who sits down with the youngsters every year and tells the stories, much like so many cultures have passed down the tales from their past. If it was ever composed, the job could be handed down when one storyteller could no longer carry on and was replaced by another. Not just the split, but some of the early tales too, like Spike and Shu, Finn's Specialist Nip, the first hoomin Honorary Cat, Shadrach & Jezebel, Thaddy & Bigman, the Rankincats, Major and Mahler, Shamrock & Thistle, Princess (the dog who was an Honorary Cat), the Cadbury hunt... well, I'll stop here because I can't begin to name them all and don't want to leave anyone out either... so I'll not attempt it. Gosh, I love this group. Ellie "squiffer" wrote in message ... oh, wow, I'm also from the old group preceding rpcc and Unca Cory makes some great points. Two of his points though are based on a misunderstanding. Let me reference those two: _____________________________________ 1.
