Default Calling all Ozzies!

I have a friend here in California who will be going to Oz in October to
attend his cousin's wedding. His cousin lives on a station a few hours from
Melbourne. He is trying to figure out how to get there. He is uneasy about
trying to drive, because you folk drive on the left, and the steering wheel
is not where we Americans think it should be in your cars. He is trying to
figure out the best way to get from Melbourne to the station where his
cousin lives. I realize that nobody can give definite information without
knowing just where the station is, but does anyone have an knowledge of
buses that might possibly get there, or have any suggestions at all?

Naturally, it depends where the station is.

Tullamarine, the airport your friend would fly into to go to Melbourne, is
perhaps an hour or so away from the Melbourne CBD. It is serviced by a
buses, coaches, and taxies (not sure about trains) .

We also have 'airport shuttles', that is, you can hire a driver to drive you
to wherever you want to go. They generally drive a mini-bus, pick up a
bunch of people from the airport to go in the same general direction, but
will drop you at your door.

Again, it really depends exactly where the station is and how far out of the
closest town it is.

The best option may well be for your friend to be picked up at the airport
by their relatives. Driving a few hours to pick up folks from the airport is
a relatively common occurance in Oz, so its not such a big thing to ask,
expecially when its 'one off' for an international relative coming in for a
wedding.

If you're paddling upstream in a canoe and a wheel falls off, how many
pancakes can you fit in a doghouse? None, icecream doesn't have bones.

If the station is near a regional centre (Ballarat, Bendigo,
Shepparton, Albury, etc) your friend may be able to catch a domestic
flight to a town near the wedding and get picked up from there.
Otherwise, the locals may be able to arrange for him to get a lift
with one of the guests driving from Melbourne.

The train system works reasonably well for getting to the major
regional centres and the bus system is also pretty good, albeit
slow.

The regional airlines, Rex, VirginBlue and Qantas domestic, may be
good places to start looking.
